Hello everyone,

I have had an IKEA Malm bed for a while now, and the frame makes an annoying squeaking noise whenever I move. The sound seems to come from the wooden or metal frame and significantly affects sleep comfort.

I have already tried tightening the fasteners, but it didn’t help. The bed is less than three years old, and I would prefer not to buy a completely new one or replace the frame.

My main question to the community is: How can the squeaking on the Malm bed frame be effectively fixed? Are there proven methods to stabilize the joints and permanently eliminate the squeaking?

Which tools, lubricants, or other aids do you recommend for this?

I appreciate any advice that can solve this problem long term.

Hi Nakau,

Those squeaky beds can be really annoying – I know that all too well! 🙂

What usually helps with a Malm bed frame are a few simple tricks:

1. Completely loosen all screws and joints, then apply some wood wax or candle wax to the contact points. This acts as a lubricant that prevents friction.
2. If there are metal connectors, a little silicone spray can work wonders because it doesn’t stick or attract dust.

Sometimes, placing thin fabric or felt strips between the wood and metal helps as well – this breaks the direct wood-to-metal contact and stops the squeaking.

Good luck, and it’s great that you don’t want to replace the frame – a bit of care and wax usually fixes it! 😉

Hello Nakau,

I would like to answer your question from the basics, in case that helps: For bed frames like the IKEA Malm, where different materials, often wood and metal, come together, the squeaking usually results from tiny movements at the connection points.

Tightening screws is one of the first steps, but as you mentioned, it’s not always enough. This is because wood changes over time (e.g., moisture absorption) and can cause the fittings to become looser.

You could try the following:
- Check all connections for tightness and systematically retighten them.
- Lightly sand rough surfaces where wood meets metal, then apply a suitable lubricant or damping material (e.g., candle wax or graphite powder).
- Use felt pads or thin rubber strips on contact surfaces to reduce friction.

If you have further questions about your tools or specific products, feel free to ask again!

Additional information:

The IKEA Malm bed frame is made of particleboard with a foil coating and metal fittings. The creaking noise occurs due to movement at contact points or loose connections.

Recommended repair steps:
1. Tighten all screws and bolts with the appropriate tools.
2. Clean contact surfaces on wood and metal to remove dust and dirt.
3. Apply candle wax or special furniture oil to friction points. Avoid lubricants based on oil or silicone, as they may damage the foil on the particleboard.
4. If necessary, place felt or rubber pads under components to reduce friction between metal and wood.

Alternatively, a professional can be consulted if the source of the noise cannot be clearly identified.

That is certainly helpful, but I wonder if this is merely a temporary fix rather than a long-term solution.

It would be interesting to know how durable these cushioning materials are under daily use and whether they need to be replaced over time. This could be another goal alongside the repair: How can the bed frame issue be solved in a lasting and sustainable way without constant maintenance?

Additionally, I would critically question whether the squeaking might be caused by warping or stress in the wood. Is an analysis of previous loads or changes in moisture content needed to fully understand the cause?

These are questions we might want to consider before just relying on lubrication.
