Hello everyone, I recently bought some IKEA Malm furniture (desk and chest of drawers) that I want to place in a room with carpet flooring. Now I’m wondering: what is the best way to secure or stabilize these Malm pieces so that they don’t slide or tip over on the carpet, especially when I’m using the desk or pulling out the drawers? I don’t want to cause any permanent damage to the carpet, but at the same time, stability needs to be ensured. Does anyone have experience securing large furniture on carpet? I’d also appreciate tips on helpful products or DIY solutions!
Hello fopau, your concern is very practical and often underestimated. Malm furniture is relatively lightweight, which is why it can slide on carpets. My recommendation:
1. Use furniture pads or felt glides: These pads prevent direct slipping on the carpet and also protect the floor.
2. Use foam rubber mats or anti-slip mats specifically designed for furniture: These can be placed under the furniture to increase grip without damaging the carpet.
3. Use clamps or corner braces: If you place them between the furniture and the wall, they prevent tipping or sliding.
4. Tape solutions like double-sided carpet tape can help but may not always be residue-free.
It is important to avoid moisture and adhesive residues on the carpet. It’s best to test the materials in an inconspicuous area first.
If you need to move the desk regularly, a combination of an anti-slip mat plus wall fixing is worthwhile. For the chest of drawers, you can also screw the corner braces firmly to the wall.
If you want, I can also recommend a link to an affordable anti-slip mat that I use myself!

Hi fopau, I have to agree with Guyju, especially the combination of non-slip mats and additional wall anchoring is ideal. Malm furniture is not very heavy, but it holds less securely on carpet.
You can also place small furniture stoppers under the legs, like silicone pads, which increase friction. If your furniture has holes at the back for dowels, I would definitely recommend using wall anchors. This improves safety against tipping, especially if you have children or move around a lot at the desk.
Regarding the topic of "no damage to the carpet": there is indeed a slight risk with double-sided tape, as adhesive residue can be left behind. The safest options are felt-like or rubber-like non-slip materials that can also be removed easily.
One extra tip: regularly check that the furniture is still stable, especially if the carpet is very plush or has a deep pile, as the position of the furniture can shift slightly.

My secret tip: rubber pads from the automotive section! They provide great grip and don't damage either the carpet or the furniture. Just slip them under the furniture legs, and no more sliding noises 🙂
Absolutely right, but you can find those mats almost anywhere and in many different places. For me, such a simple solution is the most practical because it doesn’t affect the building structure or require any adhesive.
Good luck! And remember: a little sliding means you can work comfortably at your desk—but not that the furniture will glide across the room 😉

This is brilliant, all the information you have gathered here! :-)
I just wanted to remind you that there are special furniture feet with rubber designed specifically for carpeted floors. You can attach these directly to Malm furniture, ensuring everything stays stable and secure over time!
A super simple solution that prevents any sliding back and forth!
I completely agree with that! My furniture has been rock solid for years, and I feel much safer with the wall fixing, especially for classic pieces like Malm.
So keep at it, soon everything will be perfectly secure! 🙂 🙂
