Kindenze1025 Jun 2024 09:37Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to assemble an IKEA Malm bedroom set and want to proceed with as few mistakes as possible. Unfortunately, I have heard from friends and acquaintances that assembling this furniture is not very easy and mistakes can easily happen, which may affect stability or appearance, for example.
Therefore, my question to the community: Are there any proven tips or tricks you follow when putting together Malm furniture to avoid common assembly errors?
I am especially interested in how you deal with the often confusing instructions, which tools really work best, and whether you have experience with specific parts that tend to cause problems.
I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Hey Kindenze10,
the Malm set is really a classic that can easily cause some confusion – but don’t worry, that’s actually great! 🙂 I assembled a complete Malm set myself last year and can tell you from experience: Always keep everything organized and place the parts next to the instructions. That way, nothing gets lost and it stays clear.
My tip: Don’t just start screwing blindly, but read through the steps completely first. Sometimes, for example, you need to make sure the wooden dowels are properly seated under a few screws – that saves you a lot of frustration in the end!
And of course, a good Phillips screwdriver plus a cordless drill driver with torque control are invaluable. Don’t tighten too much, or you could damage the wood.
If you want, I can also share some tricks for the drawers – they are often the tricky part with Malm. Good luck!

Hello Kindenze10 and all interested readers,
I would like to systematically address the key points that can help ensure the error-free assembly of Malm furniture.
1. Preparation:
- Lay out all parts along with fittings sorted on a larger surface. This way, you can identify any missing components early on.
- Read the entire instruction manual thoroughly, even if it takes some time. In particular, pay close attention to the notes on the sequence and positioning of wooden dowels and screws, as these are crucial.
2. Tools:
- A cordless screwdriver with adjustable torque is almost indispensable. Using only hand tools is usually too time-consuming.
- A protractor or angle gauge can help to align frame parts at right angles.
3. Critical points when assembling Malm:
- The connection between the side panels and the carcass must fit exactly. It is advisable to temporarily fit and check these parts together before screwing them in.
- Drawers: Check that they slide smoothly and, if necessary, make slight adjustments if the side rails are too tight.
4. Avoiding errors:
- Do not overtighten screws to prevent wood splitting.
- Always position wooden dowels completely and precisely; otherwise, the furniture may warp.
In summary: Good preparation and patient work are essential. If something is unclear, it is better to reread the instructions or gently test all connections with light pressure.
Good luck with your assembly!

Hello everyone,
after assembling several Malm dressers and beds, I would like to add some detailed tips that are often overlooked and can lead to assembly errors.
This is a very important point. Additionally, I would recommend verifying the individual parts carefully before securing them. With Malm furniture, it is especially crucial that the back panels are perfectly aligned before nailing them in – a crooked back panel will later cause instability and warped drawers.
It also helps to use small clamps during assembly to keep the parts firmly and evenly in place. After gluing and screwing the side panels and top surfaces, you should check their vertical and horizontal alignment using a simple spirit level.
Another common pitfall are the long metal screws, which are often driven in too far. I suggest tightening them gently and then, after about 10 minutes, loosening them slightly and retightening – this helps distribute the tension more evenly and protects the material.
Yes, here are two tips as well: When working with the drawer slides, be sure they are clean; remove any dust or wood debris and wipe the slides with a dry cloth. Using the small adjustment screws on the drawers can make a big difference if they were slightly misaligned before.
I’m curious whether Kindenze10 has any special tools available or if you are working only with standard tools? That might help to refine these tips. 🙂
