Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to install several IKEA Metod base cabinets with adjustable shelves and would appreciate any tips and advice from experience on the best way to approach this setup. Specifically, I want to make sure that the shelves are installed correctly and securely, especially when adjusting the height multiple times.
I am interested in which tools and aids you would recommend, and exactly how the side panels with the series of holes are used to mount the shelves flexibly and safely. Are there any special tricks for placing the shelves precisely, particularly when the load varies due to kitchen utensils?
I have already read the IKEA instructions, but find them somewhat general and am looking for firsthand experiences that might give me a better understanding.
Thank you in advance!

The stability of the shelves and the entire structure largely depends on this wall mounting, without which the load distribution works differently. That is very helpful. I have a concrete wall, so using IKEA wall plugs for mounting the cabinets should work well.

Have you considered supporting the shelves with back panels?Yes, I will use back panels. Regarding the shelves: How are the back panels attached in Metod systems without affecting the adjustability of the shelves? Or are the back panels installed only after the shelves are mounted?

How is the back panel actually attached in Metod systems without affecting the adjustability of the shelves? Or are the back panels installed only after the shelves are mounted? The back panels are usually designed as separate pieces that you simply screw or staple onto the back of the cabinet after placing the shelves.
It is important to first install the shelves and adjust them to the correct height before attaching the back panel. The back panel then supports the entire cabinet without limiting the flexibility of the shelves, since the shelf supports are mounted inside on the side walls and are independent of the back panel.
If you attach the back panel too early, it could make inserting or adjusting the shelves more difficult.

A few more technical details:
- The back panel is often fixed with small finishing nails, which you can easily tap in with a nail set or hammer.
- There are also back panels attached with screws, particularly on kitchen furniture, as this ensures a firmer hold.
- Make sure the back panel fits completely and aligns flush with the cabinet sides to prevent any warping of the side walls.
By the way: If you later adjust the shelves, you can carefully remove and reattach the back panel anytime, if it is screwed in.

I was a bit concerned that the nailing process might damage the side panels or the shelf supports. But it seems this is not really an issue, right?

Attaching back panels in front of the shelves is problematic. It’s best to insert the shelves first, then install the back panel.I will do it that way. Is there anything else to keep in mind when installing the shelves during initial assembly? For example, how can I make sure the shelves don’t shift if I place really heavy kitchen appliances on them?
To prevent the shelves from slipping:
- Make sure the plastic inserts in the row of holes are firmly in place, as they support the shelf brackets.
- Shelf brackets must be properly and fully hooked into the side panels; replace any bent or loose brackets.
- The shelves themselves should rest flat on the support brackets, without any gaps between the bracket and the shelf.
- For high load capacity, it is recommended to use only the original shelf boards provided, not cut-down or thinner materials.
- Additionally, a sufficiently sturdy screw connection of the carcasses and secure fixing to the wall or countertop helps prevent tipping and deformation.
Together, these points ensure the stability of the installed shelves.
