TobiaslaHello community, I have a somewhat special question about the IKEA Metod kitchen furniture series: Is it actually possible to install the Metod units outdoors? I am considering whether, due to their modular design and individual components, one could create a garden kitchen or an outdoor cooking area. I am particularly interested in how weather-resistant the materials are, whether moisture or UV exposure damages the wood-based panels and surface coatings, and if there are effective protective measures for placing the furniture outside. Of course, I understand that IKEA primarily designed this furniture for indoor use, but I would still like to know if anyone here has experience using it outdoors and what recommendations or warnings there might be.

The IKEA Metod kitchen units are mostly made from particleboard with a melamine resin surface and are specifically designed for indoor use, where environmental factors such as moisture, temperature fluctuations, and UV light are less intense than outdoors. Particleboard swells very quickly when exposed to moisture, which causes the furniture to lose stability and eventually become damaged. Although the coating is scratch-resistant, it is neither waterproof nor UV-resistant in terms of long-lasting outdoor applications.
If you want to build an outdoor kitchen, I strongly recommend using special outdoor furniture or weather-resistant alternatives made with solid wood, waterproof MDF, or coated aluminum profiles. Alternatively, you could construct a weatherproof enclosure or cover and maintain the Metod units as needed, but this involves ongoing effort and remains a compromise. For occasional use in a covered area without direct exposure to the elements, the furniture might hold up reasonably well, but this is not a solution for long-term outdoor use.

The joints and fittings of Metod are not designed to accommodate movement and expansion caused by temperature changes and moisture, which leads to faster wear.

Moisture affects them quickly, especially the particleboard. This is crucial—in other words, having just a good surface finish is not enough. The lower panels absorb moisture and swell, even if the surface is relatively protected.
Therefore, I would generally advise against installing Metod furniture outdoors, even if placed under a cover. There simply isn’t sufficient resistance to the specific external stresses, and warranties are usually voided by improper use.
If anyone really wants to use the furniture outside, detailed documentation and personal experience would be interesting, but I cannot recommend it as a practical solution.
