Hello everyone, I am planning to retrofit the soft-close drawer system in my existing Ikea Metod kitchen unit to improve comfort. However, I am wondering what the best approach is to do this without compromising the stability or functionality of the drawers. I am especially interested in which steps are important during the dismantling and installation of the drawer slides and whether there are any special tools or techniques that make the installation easier. It would also be great to learn how to maintain these systems in the long term to keep the soft-close function running smoothly. Does anyone have practical experience or tips that could simplify retrofitting and maintaining the soft-close drawer systems for Ikea Metod?

Honestly, who really needs these soft-close mechanisms? In the end, these systems are quite a technical gimmick that Ikea cleverly markets, but their durability can be questioned. Why not just properly adjust the good old drawer and be done with it? Besides, too many components are installed that start squeaking or sticking after about 2 years. My opinion: soft-close is overrated as long as the drawer fits well.

For me, the main point is that retrofitting should improve comfort and durability – as my next questions might clarify: How can I avoid drawers sticking or the soft-close mechanism failing over time due to incorrect installation when retrofitting? Are there known common issues, especially with Ikea Metod, that I should pay particular attention to?

It is important to align the guides correctly and tighten the mounting screws securely. Soft wood or a large gap can affect the function. Make sure there are no foreign objects in the guide, as this can interfere with the damper. Incorrect installation is usually indicated by drawer fronts that close unevenly.

One more tip: Before retrofitting, always carefully check the serial numbers or model identifiers of the Metod components. Not every soft-close runner fits every model, especially if the kitchen is several years old. Using the wrong runner can quickly cause malfunctions.

Thanks for the tips! What about maintenance? My Metod Soft-Close drawers work reasonably well, but I have the impression that the closing mechanism hasn’t been as smooth as it was at the beginning for some time now. Are there any specific maintenance recommendations? For example, how often should I apply lubricant, and what should I absolutely avoid doing to prevent damaging the dampers?

Good question! For the maintenance of soft-close drawers, I recommend:
- Cleaning the tracks from dust and dirt about every 6 months
- Using a silicone-based lubricant every 12 months, no more often
- Never using oils or greases, as they can block the damper
- Also making sure that nothing gets into the dampers – use sprays sparingly

If the drawers become difficult to open or close, worn guides might be the cause, so replacing them is advisable.
This way, the soft-close function will last longer and the drawers will glide smoothly.
