I’m considering buying an Ikea PAX wardrobe for my small bedroom because it can be configured very flexibly. However, I’m wondering how to set up the wardrobe in a space-saving way without making the room feel cramped. Are there any specific tips regarding the ideal width, height, or internal layout to make the best use of the available space? I’m also interested in recommended combinations with sliding doors or shelving units to save space. Has anyone had experience with PAX wardrobes in small rooms and can offer advice on optimal installation?

Using sliding doors is definitely the most efficient way to save space in front of the wardrobe. Additionally, the interior layout can be optimized with pull-out elements, drawers with compartments, and wardrobe lifts to reduce wasted storage space. It is also worth considering the installation of ceiling spotlights inside or on the wardrobe to improve visibility without taking up extra room.

Important for small rooms: Pay attention to the angle at which natural daylight enters the room. A PAX wardrobe with white or light-colored doors can visually enlarge the space. If possible, avoid dark colors or high-gloss finishes, as they can quickly feel overwhelming. Inside, adjustable shelves and baskets of various sizes can help achieve maximum organization.

Thanks for the tips so far! One more question regarding depth – Ikea lists two standard depths for the PAX system. Is it reasonable to choose the 58 cm (23 inches) depth if you have more clothing rails, or does that cause too much space constraint in the room? Does anyone have any comparative experience?

A depth of 58 cm (23 inches) is ideal if you have many hanging clothes, as it provides enough space for hangers. However, especially in small rooms, you should consider how much walkway space remains. As a general rule, at least 60-70 cm (24-28 inches) of clearance should be left to prevent the room from feeling too tight. If the room allows, the larger depth is recommended. Otherwise, it’s better to go with 35 cm (14 inches) and use smart interior organization.

This is an important tip. I once ignored it and placed a cabinet with a depth of 58 cm (23 inches) in a narrow corridor – it constantly felt cramped. It’s better to go with 35 cm (14 inches) depth if you want to keep the room comfortable. If you need more storage, it’s better to build upwards.

If you have many clothes rails, then 58 cm (23 inches) depth is recommended. Only if space is really limited, use 35 cm (14 inches). It is better to make use of height.
