Hello everyone,
I have the popular IKEA Malm bed in my bedroom, which I bought and assembled myself about a year ago. For some time now, I’ve noticed that the bed is no longer standing evenly and is slightly tilted on one side. The issue does not seem to be caused by an uneven floor, as I have already checked, and the floor is completely level.
My question is: How can I realign the Malm bed to make it straight and stable again without fully disassembling it? Are there specific adjustable feet that can be added, or perhaps a particular method to adjust the frame?
I would appreciate any detailed tips or experiences that could help with this.
Thanks in advance!

Hey Manali!!!
It’s great that you described the issue so clearly! 🙂 From my experience with the MALM bed, stability often depends on the frame itself, but the screws also play a role!
I recommend starting by checking all visible screws and connection points and tightening them slightly – they often loosen over time, and that alone can make the bed more stable again.
If that doesn’t help, you can use small furniture glides or washers from a hardware store under the legs to level out any unevenness.
Don’t give up! The solution is usually simpler than you think! Good luck, and please let us know how it goes :-)

Hello Manali,
your description is already very good and shows that you can clearly identify the problem. It is indeed important to first ensure the basic stability of the structure.
The MALM bed is modular and is usually stabilized with screws and anchors. A common issue is that the connection points can loosen slightly or shift under stress.
My advice: first check the connections of the cross beams at the headboard and footboard. If these are not fully tight, the bed can easily tilt or appear uneven.
Furthermore, for longer-lasting stability, additional angle brackets might be useful, which can be mounted inside the corners if the structure needs reinforcement.
Best regards.

Good morning Manali,
First of all: great that you are thinking about this and addressing the issue so thoroughly. That helps everyone!
Regarding the problem with the uneven MALM bed, there are several possible solutions. Usually, the following applies:
1. Tighten screws and connections: IKEA furniture like the MALM bed relies on dowel joints, screws, and connectors. Over time, these can loosen slightly due to stress.
2. Check the frame: Make sure all wooden parts are properly seated and there are no cracks or deformations. Warped slatted bed bases can also have an impact.
3. Inspect the legs: Often, unevenness at the feet causes the bed to lean. This can be corrected with furniture wedges or rubber pads.
If you don’t want to disassemble the entire bed, you can try gently tightening the connections step by step with a screwdriver while checking the fit of the bed.
If you want more stability, I recommend reinforcing the structure with small angle brackets. These are relatively inexpensive and easy to install.
One more tip: If the bed stands on tiles or a smooth floor, slipping can cause it to lean—anti-slip pads often help here as well.
Good luck with it!

The MALM bed is modular and is usually stabilized with screws and dowels. That is correct. In addition to the previous tips: it is worth checking that the screws used are tightened with a torque of about 3-5 Nm (2.2-3.7 lb-ft), as loose screws can affect stability. Also, the bed’s legs should be checked to ensure they are firmly attached to the frame.

Often, unevenness can be caused by slight irregularities on the bed legs.In such cases, installing adjustable furniture feet is recommended; these are available as accessories in furniture stores. The threaded stems allow height adjustment of approximately 1-3 cm (0.4-1.2 inches), which can effectively level out unevenness or gaps without having to completely disassemble the piece.
An alternative is placing thin wooden boards or plastic pads underneath, but these are less professional solutions and carry the risk of slipping.
Finally: if the unevenness is caused by cracks in the wood or damage to the connecting dowels, it is advisable to replace the affected parts or have a professional repair performed.
I recommend a systematic approach: first check all screws, then inspect the legs, and finally install any additional adjustable feet if needed.
Hello everyone,
to address Manali’s problem in more detail, here is a brief step-by-step guide on how to straighten the MALM bed:
1. Safety check: Make sure all parts are dry and undamaged. Moisture can cause wood to warp.
2. Check screws: Use a Phillips or Allen key to inspect all screw connections. Tightening the screws slightly can often eliminate wobbling.
3. Place the frame on floor spots: Sometimes “uneven” means the floor might not be perfectly level. You can measure this accurately with a small spirit level.
4. Furniture feet or shims: If there are uneven spots, use adjustable furniture feet that can be installed under the bed legs. Some have a threaded function to adjust the height individually.
5. Install corner brackets: If the joints at the corners are loose, attaching sturdy angle brackets from the inside can help. This makes the entire structure more stable.
Common mistakes:
- Over-tightening screws, which can damage the material.
- Not checking the functionality of individual connection points.
I hope this short guide helps. If you proceed step by step, it should definitely work 🙂
