I recently mounted my BILLY shelf from IKEA using the supplied wall mounting hardware. Although everything seems to be installed correctly, the shelf still sometimes wobbles slightly, especially when bumped or under some load. I’m wondering why this happens even though the wall mounting is supposed to keep the shelf firmly in place. My specific question is:
Why does the BILLY shelf sometimes wobble despite being wall-mounted? Are there particular causes that could explain this, such as the type of wall, the fastening method, or material properties? And are there any tips on how to permanently prevent this wobbling?
Thanks for your thoughts and experiences!

Why does BILLY sometimes wobble despite being mounted to the wall? That’s a very good question and an issue I’ve seen quite often. Basically, it’s important that the wall mounting is properly secured—with appropriate anchors for your wall type (e.g., concrete, drywall) and screws.
Another factor is whether the shelf is truly level. Often, the adjustable feet aren’t set precisely, or the floor is uneven, which can cause slight movement even when the unit is wall-mounted.
Sometimes the spacing of the wall brackets is incorrect, or the mounting plate isn’t tightened enough, which reduces stability.
My advice: definitely check the type of your wall and use suitable anchors, make sure the shelf is level with the adjustable feet, and confirm that the mounting plates are securely tightened. This will prevent most wobbling 🙂

Why does BILLY sometimes wobble despite being wall-mounted?To address this issue, it is important to examine the interaction between the shelf, wall mounting, and the room conditions more closely:
1. Wall type and fasteners: For example, if the wall is made of drywall, the supplied anchors are often not optimal. In such cases, you should use special cavity anchors or larger fixings to ensure a secure hold.
2. Installation errors: Even if the correct anchors are used, screws driven in at an angle or not deep enough can reduce stability. Also, if the mounting plate is not centered or is attached too close to the top or bottom edge of the shelf, it can contribute to wobbling.
3. Floor slope and feet: Even with the shelf mounted to the wall, the adjustable feet may not be precisely adjusted. A small gap to the floor can cause slight rocking, which becomes noticeable when the shelf is loaded.
4. Load and material flexibility: Wooden components like those in BILLY have some elasticity. Under load, slight movements can occur, especially when multiple shelving units are combined.
Could you please describe the type of wall and which fasteners you used? Also, have you checked the feet adjustment? That would help me assist you more effectively.

Can you describe exactly what type of wall it is and which mounting parts were used?Let me add briefly: Wobbling often occurs when the anchor is not properly set or the shelf is standing on an uneven floor. Check both points, and you will usually find the solution.
