Hello everyone,

I am planning to install Ikea Platsa furniture at home but have not yet decided on the best type of flooring to use. My question is: What is the best base or floor surface for Ikea Platsa furniture to ensure both a stable structure and the durability of the furniture?

It is important to me that the floor can support the weight well and does not transfer moisture or scratches to the furniture. I have laminate flooring but keep considering carpet or special protective mats. Are there any recommendations that are particularly durable and also protect the furniture from possible wear and tear?

I would really appreciate well-informed experiences and suggestions!

The best option is a solid, level floor without damage, such as laminate or hardwood flooring. Moisture should be avoided. Placing the furniture directly on carpet may reduce stability.

Regarding the question: "What is the best base for Ikea Platsa furniture to ensure both a stable structure and durability of the furniture?"

Platsa furniture is modular and quite heavy, therefore:

- A flat, hard surface is essential to maintain stability. Hardwood flooring, laminate, or tiles are recommended.
- Carpeted floors can create uneven pressure points, which may cause instability due to the narrow legs.
- It is also important to protect against moisture: damp areas under the furniture can cause material damage.

Additionally, I recommend using thin felt pads or plastic protectors under the legs to prevent floor scratches and slipping. This also contributes to the furniture's durability.

Thank you for the important note regarding the furniture legs. My furniture is placed on laminate flooring about 5 mm (0.2 inches) thick, which I consider hard, but I am concerned whether it will hold up over time or if pressure marks may develop.

Are special protective mats recommended between the laminate and the furniture to prevent pressure marks and possibly reduce vibrations? If so, what should I look for specifically?

I am also curious: Are there any differences if the furniture is placed in a less heated room where it might be a bit more humid?

Are special underlay mats between laminate and Platsa useful to avoid pressure marks and possibly dampen vibrations?

Yes, that’s a good idea. For use on laminate flooring, I recommend thin, pressure-resistant felt pads or special plastic pads. These help distribute the weight more evenly and protect the floor from wear.

- Make sure the underlay is non-slip to maintain stability.
- The material should not be prone to deformation (for example, pure foam is not suitable as it compresses too much).

Regarding moisture in a cooler room:

- Platsa has a melamine resin surface, which is quite resistant to moisture, but standing moisture can still leave marks.
- To minimize moisture damage, the floor should be well ventilated, and furniture should not be placed directly on bare concrete or damp tiles.
- In more humid rooms, additional decoupling mats can help prevent moisture affecting the furniture.

I hope this is helpful.
