Hello everyone,

I am about to assemble my first IKEA Platsa system and want to make sure I use the right screwdrivers for the job. Unfortunately, the assembly instructions usually only mention the general type of screwdriver needed, without clear recommendations on the best choice.

My question is: Which screwdrivers or screwdriver sets are best suited to assemble IKEA PLATSA as efficiently and gently on the materials as possible?

I am particularly interested in the correct sizes and types (Phillips, flathead, hex key, etc.), ergonomics for longer assembly periods, and the right durability to avoid stripping screws or damaging the joints.

I would also appreciate advice on whether cordless drills with certain bits are better, or if it’s preferable to work with manual screwdrivers.

Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

For PLATSA, you usually need a Phillips screwdriver (PH2). A cordless drill with adjustable torque is convenient but not absolutely necessary.

Make sure the handle has a good grip so you can apply enough force without slipping.

Hello yaelken,

From my own experience, IKEA PLATSA usually uses Phillips screws size PH2. A good Phillips screwdriver with an ergonomic handle makes assembly much easier, especially if you are working on it for several hours.

If you want to use a cordless drill, I strongly recommend setting the torque low. This prevents the screws from damaging or splitting the wood panels. This is particularly important with particleboard.

If you prefer to work manually, make sure the screwdriver tip fits securely and is not worn out. This helps prevent slipping out of the screw recess.

I often use a PH2 screwdriver from Wiha with a rubberized handle myself; it is comfortable and durable. In my opinion, the investment is worth it because you should allow some extra time and care when assembling furniture.

Hope this helps you!

Interesting, but why only PH2? IKEA could, for example, use hex screws, which cause less wear and allow easier turning. Do you have any evidence that PH2 is really optimal and no hex option would be better?

Also, the question of whether to work with a cordless drill or extended manual tools strongly depends on the material. Particleboard and MDF react differently to screw tightening than solid wood.

Ultimately, the question might also be whether the screws should be pre-drilled to avoid splitting – something I rarely see with IKEA panels.

My assumption is that the PH2 recommendation comes more from practical standards, but maybe some users achieve better results with alternative screwdriver types and techniques. Who can objectively compare the efficiency and possible damage when assembling PLATSA using different tools?

This is exactly one of the aspects that interests me too – why does IKEA use these particular types of screws and not others?

From the manual and the included tool (a small plastic screwdriver), I assumed it was a Phillips drive, but the exact screw type regarding the optimal screwdriver for a good assembly result is crucial.

That’s a good point. Especially with a system like PLATSA made from light wood-based material, I definitely want to avoid applying too much force, or else I might unnecessarily damage parts.

Perhaps someone else can offer specific recommendations on how to properly set the torque on the cordless drill or if there are situations where it’s better to screw manually?

Hello yaelken,

I’m happy to share an overview based on my many years of experience with IKEA furniture:

- Screw type: PLATSA primarily uses Phillips screws size PH2. A precise Phillips screwdriver is therefore ideal.
- Material: PLATSA is mostly made of particleboard or MDF panels. Be careful not to damage the edges.
- Cordless screwdriver: Very useful, provided the torque is set low (usually around 2-3 Nm). This helps prevent over-tightening and stripping the screws.
- Manual screwdrivers: Great for fine adjustments and final tightening. The combination of both methods works best.
- Handle shape: Ergonomic handles with non-slip grip reduce fatigue while screwing.
- Tip: A screwdriver with a magnetic tip can help guide the screws more easily during insertion.

This should prepare you well for a stress-free assembly.
