Hello everyone,

I recently assembled a Malm bed from IKEA, but I feel it’s not as stable as I would like. Especially when sitting down or moving around on it more firmly, the frame wobbles slightly, which makes me a bit uneasy. I have already made sure to tighten all the screws securely, but I’m not sure if there are any assembly tips or adjustments that could significantly improve its stability.

How have you made your Malm bed more stable? Are there any special tips or tricks, such as particular screw techniques, additional parts, or assembly methods? I would appreciate any advice on how to get the bed to stand firmly and safely without constantly worrying that something might give way.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

I would first check whether all screws are properly tightened and no parts are missing or incorrectly installed. Then it is often worthwhile to reinforce corner joints with additional wood glue, as this significantly increases stability.

Sometimes it helps to place the bed on a level floor or to use small wooden shims to even out any unevenness. This prevents wobbling from below and provides overall stability.

Your concern is understandable because, despite the seemingly sturdy construction of a MALM bed, there are several typical points during assembly where extra care is needed to ensure maximum stability.

First: Screws should always be tightened with the appropriate torque—not too loose, but also without over-tightening, as this can weaken the material. A useful tip: screws that join wood or particleboard parts often don’t sit very deep and require a secure fit. It is advisable to pre-drill holes if not already planned and to use high-quality screws with a larger thread.

Additionally, you can apply wood glue at the joints for a more durable connection. However, be careful to assemble the parts precisely, as the glue can make fitting more difficult if the components are not aligned correctly.

Another critical point is the supports for the slatted bed base. These should be completely level and, if possible, equipped with anti-slip material to avoid tension or stress within the frame.

Additional tips:
- Check the wooden panels, especially on the sides, for warping.
- If the bed wobbles, a very thin felt pad at the contact points between the bed and the floor can already help significantly.

Which type of slatted base are you using? That can also affect overall stability.

It is also important to know whether the bed is placed on carpet, hardwood flooring, or tiles, as this can impact stability as well.

Thanks for the detailed questions! I’m using the standard slatted bed base from IKEA that comes with the bed – it’s a simple sprung slat frame. The floor is laminate but completely level; I double-checked with a spirit level.

I didn’t pre-drill any holes since the bed came as a flat-pack with pre-drilled holes. I have the feeling that the side panels sometimes give a bit and don’t hold tightly together. I assume this might be due to the joints, which are basically wooden panels fixed with screws.

Hi Kar49,

I have assembled the MALM bed several times and can recommend a clear, step-by-step approach that will make the bed significantly more stable:

1. Preparation: Check all parts for damage and sort screws by type.
2. Use of wood glue: Apply a thin layer of wood glue to all joint surfaces before assembling. This creates a much stronger bond between the panels.
3. Tightening screws: Tighten the screws with a suitable screwdriver or cordless drill, but avoid overtightening. Too much force can damage the material, which reduces stability.
4. Additional reinforcements: Where the side panels connect to the headboard and footboard, you can install small metal brackets (available from hardware stores) for extra support – this makes a huge difference.
5. Proper slatted frame installation: Make sure the slatted frame fits snugly and is well supported by the bed frame. If needed, you can add non-slip felt or rubber pads at contact points.

Tip: If you have some DIY skills, placing small spacers under the bed legs can help prevent any slight wobbling.

Feel free to ask if you want more details about installing the brackets!
