Hello everyone,

I recently ordered a KALLAX cabinet, which was delivered to me during winter. Unfortunately, after unpacking, I noticed small but clearly visible cracks in several wooden panels. Now I’m wondering if others have had similar experiences:

Have you ever received KALLAX furniture that was damaged by cracks in the panels during transport or specifically due to cold or moisture in winter conditions?

I’m especially interested in whether this is a common issue, how to prevent panel cracks, or if it might be related to storage conditions or packaging.

I would appreciate any experiences, tips for protecting against such damage, and advice on claims. Thanks in advance!

I did not experience such damage, but I would recommend allowing the furniture to acclimate carefully to room temperature immediately after delivery. Cold panels are more prone to cracking when exposed to moisture.

Hello Giseri,

your concern is very understandable. KALLAX furniture is often made from wood-based materials that are sensitive to moisture and temperature fluctuations. Especially in winter, when transportation takes place at below-freezing temperatures, it can happen that the panels develop cracks due to shrinkage or stress.

It is important to bring them slowly to room temperature after arrival and avoid using direct heat sources. Additionally, furniture should be well packed and dry before transport.

If the cracks are already very noticeable, you can also file a complaint with the retailer. Usually, these are transport damages that should be documented with photographs.

If you want, I can help you with a more detailed complaint statement!

From a technical perspective, KALLAX furniture is usually made of particleboard with a melamine coating. These materials are sensitive to temperature fluctuations and moisture.

Cracks in the boards often occur due to stresses within the material when it is transported or stored in cold conditions and then quickly warmed up.

Therefore, I recommend:
- Scheduling transport during milder temperatures whenever possible
- Storing in a dry place with a stable temperature
- Allowing the furniture to warm up gradually after delivery
- Photographing any damage immediately and reporting it to the retailer

This problem is known but does not affect all shipments. Extra caution is advised, especially during long-term transport in winter.

Oh man, that sounds really frustrating. I once received a KALLAX myself in winter – fortunately without any cracks, but dealing with the warranty process can definitely be stressful.

If I were you, I would thoroughly document the appearance of the cracks and then persistently file a complaint. Sometimes polite wording and mentioning that you suspect the transport to be the cause can help.

Do you still have the packaging? That can be important if there are follow-up questions.

Keep your chin up, these things can often be resolved 🙂

Oh no, panel cracks after a cold winter transport? 😕 That definitely sounds like material stress!

I mean, wood tends to warp when it’s damp, so internal stresses could easily develop. Just put the KALLAX in a warm room and give it some time to warm up; maybe the cracks will shrink a bit – or the furniture will seem less brittle as a result.

I’ve had this happen with a shelf before, and after a few days it was less noticeable. But if the cracks are really deep, I would definitely consider making a claim!

In any case: hope for transport during warmer seasons next time 😄
