Hello everyone, I recently purchased several IKEA Platsa units with wood surfaces and am now wondering how to best care for and protect them. Specifically, I’m interested in tips for cleaning, preventing scratches or watermarks, and recommendations on which care products are advisable or should be avoided. Since these are relatively delicate wood surfaces, I want to make sure I don’t do anything wrong and keep the furniture looking good for as long as possible. Does anyone have experience or advice specifically regarding Platsa? I look forward to practical and helpful responses.
Hello Bubamo! First of all: great choice with Platsa, the wood surfaces are really beautiful, but yes, they do need a bit of care 😉. The most important thing is to regularly wipe the surfaces dry to remove dust – this helps prevent small micro-scratches. For cleaning, I would recommend a damp (not wet!) cloth, preferably with lukewarm water. I would avoid harsh cleaners, abrasives, or alcohol, as they can dull or even damage the surface.
To prevent scratches, felt pads on the furniture legs and spacers between pieces of furniture are invaluable. And for water spots: if they appear, a soft cloth and drying as quickly as possible will help. Care oils or waxes are generally not used on Platsa – they can actually do more harm than good. In short: gentle and dry care will keep the wood happy 😉.

Cleaning wooden surfaces on furniture such as the IKEA Platsa models should generally be done without aggressive chemicals. It is recommended to use a soft microfiber cloth dampened with clean water to remove dust and light dirt. It is important to dry the area afterward with a dry cloth to avoid water residues.
To prevent scratches, felt pads under objects placed on the surface or under furniture legs are suitable. It is also advisable to avoid placing hot pots or liquids directly on the wood surface without a coaster. Unlike solid wood furniture, veneered surfaces like those on Platsa are more sensitive to oil or wax treatments, as these can cause the surface to swell or discolor.
In summary: gentle cleaning, drying, and ensuring mechanical protection.

Hello Bubamo, I’m happy to share some basic tips that are often overlooked, especially for furniture like Platsa.
1. Cleaning: Please avoid using wax, oil, or solvent-based cleaners, as they can damage the surface coating. A soft cloth slightly dampened—with water or a very mild soapy solution—is ideal.
2. Water protection: Wipe up spills immediately! Otherwise, water can leave unpleasant marks since the surface is partly slightly porous.
3. Prevent scratches: Place books or decorations on felt pads, especially on glass tops or directly on wood, to avoid fine scratches.
4. Temperature: Never place hot drinks directly on the surface—use coasters or a tray.
If you keep these points in mind, you will enjoy your Platsa furniture for a long time.

As an addition: If your Platsa furniture has wood veneer surfaces, it is especially important to handle them with care. Manufacturers often advise against using oil-based or wax-based products, as these finishes may not be compatible and could cause damage.
You should also be cautious with sharp-edged or heavy objects that can leave dents. If superficial scratches do occur, they are generally not repaired by re-oiling, but preferably with special repair kits designed for veneered surfaces.
Dry cleaning and preventive protection are key in this case.

Never place hot drinks directly on the surface – always use coasters or a tray.I can only agree with that. Heat sources in direct contact with veneered wood surfaces cause irreversible damage such as discoloration or delamination. Additionally, I recommend avoiding overly wet cloths during cleaning to prevent swelling of the wood grain. For removing stubborn stains, using a cleaner with a neutral pH is crucial; aggressive cleaners can permanently damage the veneer. Your maintenance should therefore focus on regular, gentle cleaning with minimal moisture.
