Hello everyone,
I have several Billy shelves from Ikea that I want to place on very smooth floors, specifically on parquet with a slightly glossy surface. Unfortunately, the shelves are not stable in some spots when pushed lightly, which is especially problematic when opening the doors or drawers. My question is: What is the best way to stabilize Billy shelves on smooth, slippery floors without affecting the appearance or damaging the parquet? Ideally, it should be a permanent solution that keeps the shelf securely in place but doesn’t leave marks or require too much effort. Does anyone have tips or experience with stabilizing furniture on such types of flooring? Thanks in advance!

I’ve found that placing anti-slip mats between the floor and the shelf works well. It doesn’t feel perfect right away, but it becomes more stable over time. Sometimes you feel alone with such issues, but we’ll manage it!

How can I best stabilize Billy shelves on smooth, slippery floors without affecting the appearance or damaging the parquet?A very sensible question. I would recommend first fitting the shelving feet with self-adhesive rubber or silicone pads. These increase friction and prevent slipping on smooth surfaces. Additionally, using small shelf brackets fixed to the wall can provide extra support, if possible. This also reduces the risk of tipping. Finally, it’s important to check whether the shelf is sitting fully on the floor or if there are any uneven spots — small shims placed underneath can help in those cases.
Hey Glen_fu! I know the problem – those smooth floors can be tricky sometimes 😅. For my Billy shelves, I use small rubber pads under the feet that I got from the hardware store. They are invisible, very thin, and greatly improve grip. I also attached simple screw hooks to the back panel and hung small, almost invisible wall anchors on them. This holds really well, and don’t worry, it won’t damage the wall 😎. This way, you can make the shelf very stable while keeping everything looking neat. 🙂
Hello Glen_fu,
I would like to add that many people face similar issues when it comes to smooth floors and Ikea shelving units. I always recommend not underestimating the importance of securing the unit to the wall in addition to simply adding rubber feet. Ikea usually offers compatible wall fasteners that help prevent the shelving from tipping or sliding.
To protect the floor, you can also use thin plastic pads or special anti-slip pads that can be cut to size. They are barely visible and help preserve the surface.
If you have children or pets, this combination (anti-slip feet plus wall fasteners) provides good safety against accidents and significantly reduces wobbling. If you like, I can share exact product names with you.
