Hello everyone,

I am currently working on repairing an Ikea Hemnes bed and have noticed that some replacement parts are very difficult to obtain. My question to you is: based on your experience, which replacement parts for Ikea Hemnes furniture, especially beds and dressers, are the hardest to find? I am particularly interested in whether there are specific screws, wooden slats, or perhaps special hinges that Ikea no longer offers or that are rarely available. It would also be helpful to know if you have any practical tips on how to still get hold of these parts. Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

For Hemnes, the original connecting screws are often the problem because Ikea does not sell them individually. Replacement parts for side panels on dressers are also difficult to find. Sometimes it helps to ask local timber suppliers for custom-made replacements.

I can only agree – I was really frustrated when I couldn’t get the screws for the frame of my Hemnes wardrobe anymore. It caused me quite a bit of stress because the piece holds a lot of memories. I then tried to contact Ikea directly, but they only had limited stock.

If anyone has had similar experiences, I’m interested to know: How did you handle these situations? Has anyone found a good alternative to the original parts that is sturdy enough?

Based on my thorough research and experience with Ikea Hemnes furniture, it appears that the following replacement parts are particularly difficult to obtain:

- Special connector screws or connector kits, which Ikea usually does not sell individually
- Solid wood components, especially for rare models or older series
- Metal fittings and drawer slides, which are often only available in sets

Tip: In many cases, having the Hemnes furniture piece reproduced by a local carpenter using exact measurements can help. Screws can also be ordered from specialized screw suppliers if the precise specifications are known. For fittings, there are alternative products on the market, but it is important to ensure proper fit to avoid compromising functionality.

That’s a good approach, but I think it’s also important to critically consider whether this is cost-effective—especially since Hemnes is designed as a budget-friendly furniture line. Custom work from a carpenter can quickly become more expensive than buying new.

Furthermore, I wonder if Ikea generally has an issue with spare parts because their models are so culturally widespread and affordable that they aren’t designed for long-term spare parts availability. This would be an interesting topic for Ikea itself to address, whether they need to improve in this area. Of course, there are exceptions—some fittings or metal components are easier to find, but screws and wooden parts are often difficult to replace.

That is true, but in many cases, it’s not about saving money; it’s about preserving the furniture. Sometimes there is an emotional attachment or a desire to act sustainably. In those cases, people often accept higher costs.
