Hello everyone, I am looking for protective solutions for my IKEA Hemnes furniture, especially since I have pets that like to scratch or chew on the furniture. Are there any specific protective coatings, protective films, or DIY methods that work well to preserve the surfaces and edges of the Hemnes series? It is important to me that the solution is as discreet as possible visually and does not cover or damage the natural wood too much. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on how to effectively protect such furniture in a household with pets?

Hey, great question! I completely understand – my cat also started scratching our Hemnes bed years ago, and it was really annoying! 😅 Back then, I tried using transparent furniture films, which are usually meant for tables and similar surfaces. They are clearer than you might expect and protect the surface well. It’s important to apply them smoothly so no air bubbles remain underneath. Otherwise, it looks quite minimal and holds up well. Maybe check your local hardware store for “transparent furniture film” or similar. If you want, I can also share some tips on how to apply it properly. Don’t give up! 😀👍

First of all, I think it is important to look at the question from a different angle: What kind of pets are present? Cats usually scratch, while dogs tend to chew on edges – these are very different types of wear that require different protective measures. Regarding protective films: Many of these products offer some scratch resistance but are not permanently effective under prolonged stress, especially with more aggressive animals. Instead, one could consider other coatings, such as hard wax oils or special furniture lacquers, which make the wood more durable. However, this then raises the question: Doesn’t that affect the natural appearance of the Hemnes furniture? I would like to better understand the exact requirements and types of wear to be able to give more targeted recommendations.

Thanks for the quick responses so far! Regarding pets: I have a medium-sized female dog who sometimes licks or nibbles on the lower edges of dressers and cabinets—probably out of boredom or due to teething. There are no cats in the household. Therefore, I am mainly interested in edge and corner protection. Transparent films sound good, but I’m wondering how durable they really are against dog teeth. I briefly considered hard wax oils, but I’m concerned about whether they would be compatible with the original finish of the Hemnes furniture—especially since the furniture is a bit older. Does anyone have experience with edge profiles or similar mechanical protection for furniture edges with dogs?

As an addition: Mechanical protection on furniture edges is indeed a very effective method, especially for dog-related chewing. I recommend flexible edge or corner protectors made of transparent silicone or plastic, which can be applied discreetly. These protectors are available at hardware stores and effectively shield delicate corners from bite marks. It is important to choose a model that adheres well and can be removed without leaving residue.

Regarding surface treatments: Hemnes is made of lacquered pine wood, so treatment with hard wax oil is not easily compatible, as it leaves a coating that may look different. A thin, clear wax-based polish can protect the surface but is not scratch-resistant enough for heavy chewing.

In summary, I consider a combination of mechanical edge protection plus regular surface maintenance to be the best solution.

I fully agree! 😄 My experience with silicone edge protectors was excellent – they look almost invisible and my dog wasn’t interested at all, so no chance for him to chew holes. A small tip from me: wipe them with warm water before applying, it helps improve adhesion a bit. Also, you can easily secure the protectors with some UV-resistant tape if the original adhesive weakens. It really makes a big difference when you love your furniture but still want to give your pets freedom! 👍🐾
