Hello everyone, I recently bought an Ikea Hemnes shelving unit and want to assemble it as efficiently as possible without unnecessary delays. Although the instructions for these furniture pieces are quite detailed, the assembly still requires considerable time and patience. I’m wondering if there are any proven tips or methods that can noticeably speed up the assembly of the Hemnes shelving unit. I’m already familiar with basic advice like sorting the screws in advance and assembling with two people, but maybe there are special techniques, tools, or organizational methods that can make the process significantly faster? I’m also interested in experiences with similar Ikea furniture, in case those are applicable to the Hemnes. Looking forward to any tips and ideas!

Great topic, thanks for the question! I’ve assembled Hemnes shelves a few times and can say that preparation is truly key! 😊 Here are my top tips to speed up the whole process significantly:
- Sort screws and wall plugs in small containers beforehand – this saves endless searching during assembly
- Label all boards and parts with numbers, even if Ikea already provides them – otherwise it’s easy to lose track
- A cordless drill with the right bit is invaluable, much faster and easier than using a screwdriver
- Whenever possible, work in pairs, with one person holding the pieces and the other tightening the screws

Oh, and don’t forget: stay calm! Especially with Hemnes shelves, it’s easy to get stuck reading the instructions, but with good preparation it’s fun and goes faster than you’d expect!

This is a very helpful tip. Additionally, I recommend a clear workspace organization: Arrange the individual parts in the order they appear in the instructions. This reduces the need to switch between different assembly steps.

Using a cordless drill with torque control also helps prevent damage to the wooden panels, which in turn avoids rework and delays.

When assembling the Hemnes shelving unit, it is advisable to first install the larger frame and side panels, then insert the back panels to ensure stability.

In general, dividing the work into clear phases – preparation, main frame assembly, inserting shelves, and final fastening – is a proven approach that saves time and prevents mistakes.

You already have a good foundation! A little trick of mine to speed things up even more: set up a station during assembly for placing and holding screws—a sort of small screw “supplier.” That way, you don’t have to keep grabbing new screws from the box.

Also, use a tray or a small magnetic container for small parts—this saves annoying search time, especially if something falls.

And a little fun tip: a playlist with your favorite soundtrack can lift the mood and make the assembly fly by! 😉 So not just fast, but enjoyable too!
