Hello everyone, I have a specific question that hopefully some of you have encountered before: How can you protect an IKEA Billy bookcase from warping in the long term? Especially with larger units that have many shelves, the wood or particle board often tends to warp or bend slightly over time, particularly when the load or humidity changes.

I am mainly interested in what measures during assembly or daily use can help keep the shape of the bookcase as stable as possible. Are there any special techniques to be aware of or effective reinforcements? Also, the choice of the right location in the room might be relevant. Who has concrete tips or experiences that go beyond the usual assembly instructions? Thanks in advance!

Hello RAYGI, that is a very practical and well-formulated question! Billy bookcases are unfortunately prone to warping because of their construction from thin particle board – especially if they are assembled without frame reinforcement.

An important tip is to secure the back panel as firmly as possible or even replace it with a more stable one. It acts like a type of cross brace and provides greater stability.

Additionally, you should not only fasten the bookcase to the wall but also load it evenly. Heavy items should ideally be placed at the bottom to avoid uneven pressure distribution.

Sometimes it can also help to reinforce the individual shelves with additional small support strips. This provides extra stability against sagging.

I hope this gives you a good initial overview.

To add to Ramon4’s point: The main reason for warping in Billy shelves is related to the material properties of particleboard and the construction with back panels. The thin boards react strongly to moisture changes, swelling or shrinking slightly, which causes deformation especially in narrow shelves.

I recommend paying close attention to a few steps, especially when the shelves will be used frequently or bear heavy loads:

1. Reinforce the back panel: The supplied thin hardboard is often too weak. Either use a thicker HDF board or install an additional plywood back panel, secured with screws.
2. Extra stabilization: Attach diagonal wooden battens on the sides and inside to secure the edges.
3. Shelf supports: For long shelves, glued or screwed-on battens along the underside can help prevent sagging.
4. Moisture management: Avoid placing the unit in damp rooms or near windows. Maintain stable indoor humidity levels, using a dehumidifier if necessary.

How exactly are you using the shelf? More details would help, as whether you are storing books, decorations, or heavy binders makes a big difference for the load and the choice of measures.

Thanks for the detailed reply, Domau0! The shelf is mainly used for storing books, including some heavy volumes, so not light decorative items. About 4 shelves are fully loaded with books, plus some binders.

In addition, the shelf is positioned against an interior wall, so there is no direct sunlight, but humidity naturally varies depending on the season (the apartment is normally heated).

I was considering replacing the back panel with a more stable wooden board, but I wonder how to attach it securely since the original nails are quite short. Does anyone have practical experience with screws or other fastening methods?

The idea of reinforcing the back panel is definitely a good one.

For replacing it with a sturdier board, I recommend attaching the back panel with small screws and pre-drilling to avoid splitting. It’s best to use thin wood screws (3–3.5 mm), which should not go all the way through the panel to prevent the shelf from being pushed away from the wall.

Alternatively, metal brackets can be installed on the inner edges to further stabilize the back panel. This is especially helpful for long shelves carrying heavy loads.

Another tip is to secure the bookshelf to the wall using metal wall anchors to prevent lateral movement. This can help avoid warping over time, especially when the shelves are filled with books.

Attach the back panel securely and always firmly screw the shelf to the wall.

Do not overload the shelves and place heavy items on the lower compartments.

Balance the humidity levels in the room.
