kineoHello everyone,
I am considering using an IKEA KALLAX shelf as a plant shelf because it is very flexible in its configuration and fits well with the look of my home. However, I’m concerned about whether frequent watering and the resulting moisture could cause mold or other damage to the shelf.
Does anyone have experience with using the KALLAX shelf as a plant shelf in terms of moisture issues? How is the material quality, and are there any special tips to prevent moisture damage? I would really appreciate any experiences and advice on this topic!

About the KALLAX series: The shelving unit itself is made of particleboard with a melamine surface. This surface is generally not waterproof and can swell or warp if exposed to moisture over a long period.
If you plan to place plants on it, I strongly recommend using waterproof plant trays or special containers to prevent standing water on the surface. It also helps to line the shelves with plastic sheeting or use a protective layer if needed.
These measures significantly reduce the risk of moisture damage and mold. There are also reports that the shelf can last a long time with proper care, but without protection, it is definitely not ideal for permanently damp environments.

From practical experience: I have used the shelf myself and recommend protecting the interior surfaces with water-repellent paint or lamination if you plan to place plants inside. An alternative is to use simple plastic coasters and carefully seal the substrate containers.
Anyone using the shelf without any protection will likely experience moisture damage sooner or later.

Does anyone have experience with whether the KALLAX shelf is suitable as a plant shelf when it comes to moisture issues?I think this question should also be considered from the perspective of indoor climate factors. Moisture is not only produced by watering but also by specific air circulation and temperature.
Since KALLAX is open, it does allow air circulation, but the interior can still collect condensing moisture if the plants evaporate a lot of water. In poorly ventilated rooms, this increases the risk of mold on the shelf.
Therefore, my advice is to ask yourself how often you can ventilate and whether you can take additional measures to control moisture, such as using a dehumidifier or fans. Technically, the shelf is only somewhat suitable for damp environments. It might also be worth considering building a shelf from treated wood or metal.
I use my KALLAX as a plant shelf and love it! 🙂 It’s really important, as already mentioned, to use coasters and quickly remove any excess water. This way, the shelf stays in great condition while also providing a nice display for the plants!
The unit is very versatile and looks fantastic, so if you manage the moisture carefully, it works perfectly. 😊
