Hello everyone, I have some IKEA Malm furniture, specifically dressers and nightstands, that I would like to enhance visually. My goal is to make them look more high-quality and unique without having to buy completely new furniture. What specific methods or materials do you recommend for improving the appearance of Malm furniture? I’m especially interested in options like surface treatments, adding handles, using films or veneers, or other creative techniques. How do you approach projects like this, and what should I keep in mind regarding durability and effort? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Which specific methods or materials would you recommend to visually improve Malm furniture? As a basic first step, surface treatment is recommended. For Malm furniture made of particleboard with a foil coating, sanding is only possible to a limited extent, so I suggest thoroughly cleaning and lightly scuffing the surface first to ensure proper adhesion. After that, the following methods can be applied:
1. Self-adhesive furniture film: High-quality films with woodgrain patterns or solid colors can quickly transform the piece. It is important to apply the film without bubbles and to choose a film thickness that ensures better durability.
2. Installing new handles: The metal handles on Malm furniture can be easily replaced. Metal or leather handles significantly enhance the overall look.
3. Colored paints: Acrylic or chalk paints cover well if the foil surface is lightly sanded beforehand. A matte finish looks especially refined.
4. Decorative elements: Trim moldings or decals as accents, for example, brass profiles or wallpaper scraps placed under glass panels.
For durability, I recommend choosing quality films and applying a good clear coat for protection when using paint. The effort and cost are moderate, and with some patience and care, a good result can be achieved.

Installing new handles: The metal handles on Malm furniture are very easy to replace. That’s true, it’s worth taking a closer look here: Malm furniture is designed so that the handles are attached with two screws from the inside of the drawer. When replacing them, you need to pay particular attention to the hole spacing, which is usually 128 mm (5 inches). Not every handle fits, so handles that match the drill holes exactly are a good choice.
If you prefer handles with a different hole spacing, you will need to drill new holes or fill the existing ones. This should be carefully prepared using filler and sandpaper to ensure the surface looks good afterward. I also recommend filling and sanding all drill holes and any marks thoroughly before painting or applying adhesive vinyl to achieve a smooth, even finish.
Another tip: When applying adhesive vinyl, pay special attention to the edges and rounded areas, as the film can more easily form air bubbles or peel off there. A heat gun can help shape the vinyl and make it adhere permanently.
What does the surface of your furniture look like currently?

What does the surface of your furniture currently look like?I think it’s great that you’re approaching this so carefully instead of just saying “buy some vinyl wrap.” Especially since Malm-type furniture often has a smooth laminated surface, refinishing can become frustrating if you rush or use the wrong materials.
From my own experience, I would add: don’t get discouraged if your first attempts don’t look perfect. It takes patience, especially if you’re not an experienced DIYer.
Sometimes adding personal touches helps, like small wooden trim pieces to frame the fronts or eye-catching knobs/handles that create a color or material contrast. This turns a simple piece of furniture into a unique item.
I’d also like to know whether you want your furniture to have a more modern or classic style, as that helps when choosing colors and handles. 🙂 And if durability is a concern: I once painted a drawer completely with chalkboard paint – it looked great, but after a few months, wear became visible around the edges.
