Hello everyone,

I recently painted several IKEA Platsa furniture pieces myself, mainly made of MDF panels. I used primer, filler, and water-based acrylic paints. My question is: How long does the paint finish typically last on self-painted IKEA Platsa furniture in everyday use, especially when the furniture is placed in a normal living area and used on a regular basis? I am particularly interested in practical experiences regarding durability, abrasion resistance, and possible aging processes of the painted surface.

Additionally, it would be helpful to know if special preparation steps or certain types of paint can significantly improve the durability. Thanks in advance for your insights and tips!

I personally painted PLATSA for almost a year. When the furniture is used normally, the paint finish easily lasts 2-3 years. A clean primer and sanding between coats are essential.

Great question! I think it’s fantastic when you design your own furniture. 🙂 In my experience, the finishes on PLATSA furniture last over 4 years with proper preparation and painting – and I use the cabinets every day! My tip: use a high-quality acrylic paint and let each coat dry thoroughly. It really pays off!

Under normal conditions, the durability of paint on DIY-painted MDF surfaces in living areas is generally expected to be around 3 to 5 years. This depends heavily on the type of paint used, surface preparation, and the level of wear. More abrasion-resistant paints, such as polyurethane (PU) or specialized acrylic furniture paints, significantly extend the lifespan.

Thorough preparation including sanding, dust removal, and multiple primer coats is crucial. Signs of aging usually appear as slight yellowing or dull patches, especially with water-based paints.

I painted my PLATSA furniture 2 years ago, and the finish has held up well under normal use so far. It is important that the paint is fully dried. I have not experienced any wear or abrasion spots.

This is very important. Additionally, I recommend polishing the surface with fine sandpaper after the final coat and then sealing it with a clear varnish. This improves abrasion resistance and protects against discoloration.

A primer specifically designed for MDF is also advisable to prevent swelling when exposed to moisture.
