Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Malm bed, and I noticed that one of the wooden slats on the headboard has come loose and the veneer is peeling off in places. I want to repair the headboard so that it is stable again and looks neat, but I don’t want the repair to be too complicated and would like to preserve the appearance as much as possible. Does anyone have experience repairing a Malm headboard, especially with loose wood and damaged veneer? What steps and materials would you recommend for a durable and visually appealing repair? I look forward to any tips or instructions.

Hey neolen, I know that feeling! These pieces of furniture really need to be maintained 🙂 For loose wood, you can use wood glue, preferably a strong one like Ponal or a similar brand. If the veneer is only partially peeling off, you can carefully press it back down and secure it with some glue. If it looks uneven, fine sandpaper and maybe a repair marker in a matching color can help. Important: Always let it dry well and don’t use too much glue, otherwise the wood will swell. There’s no guarantee of success, but usually this works really well for the time being!

Glue wooden strips with wood glue and secure them with clamps. Apply adhesive sparingly on the veneer and weigh it down with a board. After drying, sand lightly, then touch up with repair wax or a repair stick.

That’s already a very important tip. I would add that it’s best to roughen the bonding surfaces with fine sandpaper before gluing – this improves adhesion. If you don’t have proper tools, sometimes simple clamps or improvised clips are sufficient. For veneer damage, be careful not to apply too much glue, as it can swell and look unsightly. If the veneer is peeling, you can gently lift it with a toothpick, apply glue underneath, and then press it down carefully. If you like, I can also give you tips on color matching.

Regarding durability: Make sure the wood glue you use is waterproof to ensure longer-lasting satisfaction, especially if the headboard is cleaned occasionally. Also, if the strip has multiple screw holes, check if they are still secure. Loose screws can be fixed by filling the holes with wood filler and then drilling new holes. For veneer, the adhesive should dry clear so that nothing shows through later. If you need a small precaution: test the wood glue first on an inconspicuous spot.

I recently had a similar issue with my Malm headboard and understand how frustrating it can be. What really helped me was staying calm after gluing – the drying times are important to achieve a clean result without the veneer peeling off again. Light sanding with 220-grit sandpaper also improved the finish. A little tip: a bit of patience works wonders here. If you’re unsure about the veneer’s appearance, it’s better to make several small repair steps rather than fixing everything at once!
