Hello everyone,

I am looking for replacement parts for older IKEA Malm furniture models, specifically for a Malm bed frame from the early 2000s. Are replacement parts still available for such older series? If so, where could one obtain them? I ask because my bed frame has an issue with the metal connectors, and I would like to replace only the damaged part instead of buying a whole new piece of furniture.

Maybe someone has experience with whether IKEA keeps replacement parts for these older models in stock or if third-party suppliers are a good alternative?

Thank you in advance!

Hello Sarsin,

Regarding your question: Yes, IKEA generally offers replacement parts for many of their furniture pieces. However, availability can be limited for older models like the Malm that are over 15 years old. The best chances are at your local IKEA service center or through their online customer service, where you can submit a detailed description or even a photo of the part.

If IKEA no longer has the parts, I would recommend looking in online forums or specialized dealers for used IKEA furniture parts. Sometimes hobbyists and exchangers sell individual components there.

Keep in mind: especially with metal connectors (e.g., dowels, screws, or fittings), there are often identical replacement parts used in different series or products. In such cases, a universal parts kit could also be helpful.

If you like, I can also provide tips on which parts are often interchangeable and how to measure precisely before ordering replacements. 🙂

Good question, Sarsin.

From the manufacturer’s perspective, it is common for spare parts for mass-produced series to be available for many years, as IKEA follows a fairly customer-friendly spare parts policy. However, this also requires a certain level of demand. With older furniture from the early 2000s, it becomes more difficult because stockpiling is discontinued or parts are removed from the range.

A practical tip: if standard fasteners used in Malm bed frames are involved, it is worth researching compatible replacement parts from newer series. The dimensions and screw types have changed very little over the years.

Additionally, I would recommend asking directly at the IKEA store whether there are any “leftover stocks” or special collection items for older model ranges. Sometimes these spare parts are not actively advertised but can be obtained through customer service.

Hello Sarsin,

Here are some more detailed notes regarding your issue. Replacement parts for older Malm models are generally available, but there are a few important points to keep in mind:

1. Model number and year of manufacture: It is important to know the exact model or at least the year of manufacture, as the connectors may have changed over time. Malm bed frames from 2003 differ in the design of metal fittings from models made in 2010 or later.

2. Check with IKEA: The primary contact is IKEA customer service. They often provide PDF assembly instructions with exploded diagrams, which can help you accurately identify the replacement parts. After that, you can inquire specifically about part numbers.

3. Stock availability: Replacement parts are not stored indefinitely. IKEA usually keeps parts available for around 10 to 15 years. Individual screws or connectors are often more readily available.

4. Alternative sources: There are third-party suppliers specializing in used and new IKEA replacement parts, such as “IKEA Ersatzteile Shop” or various auction platforms. You can often find parts there surprisingly easily.

5. Custom fabrication or adaptation: Some metal connectors can also be replaced with universal braces or specialty screws if you measure and compare carefully.

One more question: Which exact metal connectors are broken on your end? Can you provide the designation or dimensions? That will make tailored advice much easier.

This is my main initial advice. If you can provide more details, feel free to share them.

Thank you for the detailed information, Surela. The metal connectors are the angle brackets (L-shaped metal pieces) that join the side panels to the end panels. Specifically, some of the screws in the brackets have become worn out, which reduces stability. The bracket itself is undamaged; the screws are primarily the issue.

Unfortunately, I don’t have the original screws or part numbers. I wanted to find out as precisely as possible whether replacement screws or entirely new brackets can be obtained without having to replace the entire bed.

Hello Sarsin,

when it comes to the screws for the angle brackets, it might be enough to simply use new metric screws of a similar size and length. Often, IKEA furniture uses standard screws, for example M6 or M8 with a specific length.

My advice: measure the diameter and the threaded length of the old screws—if you can still find them—or check the assembly instructions, as these often include the specifications.

IKEA does not always sell screws separately, but hardware stores usually carry all common screw types you will need. I would recommend using good quality screws, as stability is critical for the bed.

If you want, I can help you determine which sizes will fit. 🙂
