Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to refinish my IKEA Besta furniture with a new paint to give it a more personalized and high-quality finish. I am wondering which types of paint are best suited for IKEA Besta surfaces, considering both durability and a visually appealing result.
In particular, I am interested in recommended paint types that adhere well to MDF surfaces and are easy to apply. Factors such as odor during application, drying time, and potential yellowing over time are also important to me.
I would appreciate any experiences, product recommendations, or technical advice on surface preparation.

Hi Ribla30,
great question! 😉 For IKEA Besta, acrylic paint is especially popular – it dries quickly and doesn’t have a strong unpleasant odor. It’s important to sand the surface well beforehand and use an adhesion primer to ensure the paint sticks perfectly.
I did it myself: first a light sanding, then two coats of primer, sanding smooth between each. After that, apply several thin layers of acrylic paint (matte or satin finish).
Of course, it takes time to get a perfect result, but the effort is worth it. Let it dry in a well-ventilated area and take your time between coats 😉
Oh, and one more tip: using a high-quality brush or even better, a good spray gun, will give a much smoother finish! Good luck!

Of course, it takes time until the result is perfect, but the effort is worth it.Absolutely. To dive a bit deeper into the technical side: IKEA Besta uses MDF boards as the main material, which have an unpainted surface and therefore need to be properly prepared for a long-lasting paint finish.
1. Surface preparation: Start by lightly sanding with fine sandpaper (grit 220–320) to create a slightly textured surface for the primer to adhere to.
2. Primer: A solvent-free or water-based bonding primer is recommended to prevent later peeling. Since MDF absorbs a lot of moisture, the primer should be specifically designed for absorbent substrates.
3. Type of paint: Water-based acrylic paints are preferred because they produce low odor and bond well to MDF. Alternatively, 2K polyurethane (2K-PUR) paints can be used, but they require more careful handling (mixing ratios, ventilation), although they offer significantly better resistance to scratches and chemicals.
4. Application: Apply thin coats using a paint roller or spray gun to avoid drips and unevenness. Lightly sand between coats (grit 320–400) to ensure perfect adhesion of the next layer.
5. Drying time: Acrylic paints are usually surface-dry after 4–6 hours, but fully cured only after several days. 2K paints cure faster but require higher temperature and humidity conditions.
6. Long-term behavior: Acrylic paint tends to yellow slightly with sun and UV exposure; a UV-stabilized clear coat as a finish can help prevent this.
Your questions about odor and yellowing are therefore very justified. It’s worth investing in high-quality paints and considering the exact placement of the furniture.
What kind of color or finish did you have in mind exactly? Will you be placing the Besta furniture in a kitchen, living room, or another area?

Your question about odor and yellowing is therefore very valid. In addition to Fabio’s comments, I recommend the following types of paint specifically for IKEA Besta:
- 2K acrylic paints (water-based): They provide a clean finish with high scratch resistance and are ideal for furniture as they do not yellow.
- Polyurethane paints (PU): These are extremely durable, especially against mechanical wear, but are more suitable for experienced users due to longer drying times and stronger odor.
- Water-based paints with UV protection: Best if the furniture is exposed to sunlight, as these paints fade less.
Proper adhesion always requires a primer that is matched to the MDF surface.
From my experience, applying multiple thin coats with sanding in between is always better than a few thick layers. Also, good sandpaper and careful preparation are essential tools of the trade.
Regarding odor: Sufficient drying and ventilation time after each step is mandatory. Otherwise, the paint can change due to solvent effects.
In summary: For optimal application and durability, 2K acrylic or PU paints are recommended; alternatively, water-based acrylic paints offer easier handling and less odor.
