Hello everyone,

I am planning to install my new IKEA Metod kitchen units soon and am wondering which assembly adhesive works best for this purpose. Specifically, I need a strong and reliable bond between the cabinets themselves and to the walls, where screws or anchors are not always practical. It is important to me that the adhesive adheres well to the commonly used melamine surfaces of the Metod units and can withstand everyday kitchen conditions—meaning it must resist both moisture and mechanical stress.

Does anyone have experience with particular brands or types of assembly adhesives that are especially suitable for IKEA Metod kitchens? Are there any special requirements, for example regarding curing time, residue-free removal, or the possibility to make adjustments after application? Which adhesives do professionals typically use in practice and why?

I look forward to helpful tips and recommendations!

Good question, Lota61.

For IKEA Metod kitchens, which mostly use melamine-coated particleboard, I recommend polyurethane-based assembly adhesive (PU adhesive). These offer very high initial bonding strength and remain permanently flexible, which is especially beneficial in kitchens because they need to withstand temperature changes and moisture.

It is important that the adhesive also adheres well to smooth, low-absorbency surfaces – PU adhesives perform well in this regard. Common examples include "SikaBond T-55" or "Pattex Montagekleber Classic." The curing time is usually around 24 hours, although mechanical stress is often possible after just a few hours.

As an alternative to PU adhesives, there are also hybrid adhesives that offer similarly good properties and generally have less odor. For bonding Metod modules, however, I would recommend PU because it reacts to moisture after curing, providing better adhesion.

Adjustments with all adhesives are only possible within the open working time. After that, removal becomes difficult and residues may remain.

Summary:
- PU assembly adhesive (e.g., SikaBond, Pattex Classic)
- high adhesion on melamine surfaces
- permanently flexible and water-resistant
- curing time about 24h

Screws are always additionally recommended, if possible, for extra stability.

I use Pattex Classic assembly adhesive for my Metod kitchen. It adheres excellently to melamine surfaces, even in humid conditions. Fast and reliable.

I can only confirm that. For Metod kitchens, Pattex Classic is truly a very good choice. It provides a strong bond and is relatively easy to work with.

However, it is important to slightly roughen the bonding surfaces beforehand, if possible, and carefully align the parts before the adhesive sets. Most construction adhesives require about 24 hours to reach full strength.

That is indeed the crucial factor for melamine-coated kitchen furniture. PU adhesives are often durable, but you should also follow the application instructions closely, especially regarding humidity during curing, since PU adhesives usually cure with moisture.

I recommend reading the manufacturer’s guidelines carefully before use and, if in doubt, testing on a sample piece first. This helps avoid unexpected issues.

If it concerns covering kitchen backsplashes or fronts, there are also specialized acrylic adhesives that are somewhat more flexible, but for a secure connection of the modules themselves, PU adhesives are often the first choice.
