Hello everyone,

I am planning to install a flexible, custom shelving system in my apartment, similar to the IKEA PLATSA. I appreciate PLATSA for its adaptability and modern design, but I have also heard of other systems that might be more durable or long-lasting, or perhaps better suited to a sharp, minimalist interior style.

I am therefore interested in alternatives to the IKEA PLATSA shelving systems—especially regarding modular flexibility, material quality, installation effort, and of course style.

Does anyone here know of comparable or possibly better shelving systems that are as flexible as PLATSA?

I would also welcome suggestions on manufacturers that offer a good balance of design, functionality, and price.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

A really good alternative to IKEA PLATSA in the field of modular shelving systems is the USM Haller system. It is also modular, very well made, and offers numerous design options. Of course, the price is significantly higher, but in return, you get a timeless design and a durable construction made of metal and glass.

Another point is flexibility: USM Haller modules can be expanded or reconfigured at any time – similar to PLATSA, but a bit more refined. However, some DIY skills are recommended for assembly, as the modules need to be fitted together precisely.

If you value design and durability, this is probably the best alternative.

I would recommend the VASAGLE shelving system. It is more affordable than USM while still offering good stability. The modules are not as customizable as those from PLATSA, but they are perfectly adequate for standard shelves. Assembly is straightforward.

Sounds interesting, especially the points about durability and design. Could you maybe briefly explain what the disadvantages of USM Haller are compared to PLATSA? I imagine the assembly might be a bit more complicated, but how about the flexibility in configuring the system?

I’m not familiar with the VASAGLE system yet. Does anyone have experience with the durability or assembly of VASAGLE shelves? How flexible is it with the modules, for example for smaller or unusual rooms?

Thanks in advance!

Regarding alternatives to IKEA PLATSA, from my own experience I can recommend the CONVORT modular shelving system from Regalsysteme.de.

- It is similarly modular, allowing for easy adjustment of size and shape.
- The materials are high quality, mostly MDF panels with melamine coating, ensuring durability.
- Assembly is straightforward, and the shelves can support a good amount of weight.

Compared to PLATSA, CONVORT tends to have a more understated and subtle design, which can be an advantage depending on your interior style. The sturdy construction also makes the shelves feel more robust. In terms of price, CONVORT is usually a bit higher than basic IKEA options but significantly less expensive than USM Haller.

In summary: For those looking for a modular system that is easy to reconfigure but not too costly, CONVORT offers a solid alternative.
