Hello everyone,

I have a question that has been on my mind for a while: How can I properly align wobbly Malm drawers so that they no longer stick or wobble but still operate smoothly?

I own several Ikea Malm dressers, and with several drawers, I notice that they either run crooked when pulled slightly or have some play, making opening and closing unpleasant. I have noticed that the issue probably isn’t with the drawer slides but rather with the alignment of the drawers themselves or the installation of the drawer runners.

I’m also wondering: Are there any tricks to adjust the drawers, especially if the screws of the drawer slides or guide rails are already loose? Or should I actually loosen all the screws and realign the runners?

If repair is necessary—what kind of tools and approach are the simplest and most effective without having to take everything apart? Your tips or experiences with Malm drawers would be really helpful! Thanks in advance for reading.

Hello Lugedan 🙂

I’m very familiar with the problem of wobbly Malm drawers – they can be quite tricky sometimes, even though you like them. Generally, the first step is to tighten all the screws on the drawer slides slightly, as they often loosen over time, which causes the wobbling.

Yes, if the screws are still in good condition, you can usually shift the slides slightly to realign everything properly. One tip: Malm drawers run on plastic runners – if these are damaged or worn out, attaching small strips of thin felt or even electrical tape to the inside of the slide can help. This cushions the movement a bit and results in smoother gliding.

But be careful: it must not be too thick, otherwise the drawers will jam. I managed to get my drawers running like new again – without having to take them apart completely. It does require a bit of patience and a delicate touch.

Good luck with the screws! 🙂

Hello Lugedan,

I really appreciate that you described the problem in such detail – that’s very helpful for giving targeted advice.

Regarding the issue: Malm drawers are quite common and typically have two types of problems when they wobble or don’t run smoothly. Type 1 is the alignment of the drawer slides (drawer sides) on the cabinet. Type 2 concerns the drawer itself, meaning whether it is warped or the drawer sides are not exactly parallel.

Here is my workflow for optimal adjustment:

1. Remove the drawer completely: Pull the drawer all the way out until it detaches from the slides.

2. Check the drawer slides: First, inspect the screws fastening the slides to the cabinet – they should be tight but not overtightened to avoid damaging the wood.

3. Inspect the drawer: Look at the sides of your drawer to see if they are uneven or warped. If so, you can use a fine sanding block to smooth out small irregularities where the drawer boxes make contact.

4. Realignment: Loosen the screws holding the slides in the cabinet slightly, and align them properly using a spirit level or at least a short straight edge. A precise alignment is very important.

5. Check rollers and plastic glides: These components should be clean, free from dirt, and not bent. Some models have adjustment screws on the guides, which is rare for Malm, but if present, you can make adjustments there.

6. Installation: Screw everything back in and reinstall the drawer. Check the movement; it should be smooth, easy to operate, and free of side play.

Should you… loosen all screws and realign the slides?

Yes, that’s usually the best approach. I can assure you that the effort pays off afterward – even if it sounds annoying.

Tools: You will need a Phillips screwdriver, a small screwdriver for fine work, possibly a try square or spirit level, and some time.

If you want, I can send you a step-by-step guide and tips on the tools.

How many drawers are having issues? Then I can help you more specifically.

Hello Lugedan,

I would like to add something because this topic is often underestimated: The cause of wobbly Malm drawers usually lies in the interaction between the slides and the drawer frame.

Misalignment of the slides and warped drawers

Exactly! Besides correct alignment, it is important to ensure that the drawers not only run parallel but also that the slides are clean and free of debris. Dust or small particles can significantly affect the sliding motion and sometimes cause a wobbling feeling.

I also recommend treating the drawer slides with a bit of silicone spray. It acts as a lubricant, does not attract dust, and makes the movement noticeably smoother.

Finally, a tip: If the drawer side panels are very thin, even slight pressure on one side can cause wobbling. Sometimes it helps to carefully insert small wooden shims in a few spots between the slide and the drawer — just enough to eliminate play without causing any binding.

Give it a try; it might noticeably improve your Malm drawers.
