Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some Malm furniture from IKEA, including cabinets and drawers that fit very well in my room. However, I am concerned about the delicate surfaces and how to effectively protect them from unsightly scratches. The furniture has a white coated finish, and I have heard that while the surface looks modern, it is also quite prone to scratches and minor damage.

My main question is: how can Malm furniture be protected from scratches without affecting its appearance or feel? Are there proven protective products, films, or home remedies that work well for this? And what should definitely be avoided to prevent long-term damage to the furniture?

I would appreciate detailed advice, especially if anyone has practical experience with this topic and can share what works well and what doesn’t. Thank you!

Hello plonau,

Regarding your question: "How can Malm furniture be protected from scratches without affecting the appearance or feel?" — this can be answered comprehensively.

Malm furniture has a melamine resin coating, which is resistant to moisture but still relatively sensitive to mechanical damage like scratches. To protect this furniture effectively, I recommend the following steps:

1. Use transparent, self-adhesive protective films on heavily used surfaces. These films are thin, barely visible, and can be removed without leaving residue if needed. Make sure to choose films specifically designed for furniture surfaces.

2. For areas such as tabletops or drawer fronts that are frequently used, a vinyl mat or a special table runner can provide additional protection against mechanical wear.

3. Avoid sharp objects or abrasive cleaning agents. Clean with a soft, damp cloth and mild dish soap.

4. A useful tip is to attach felt pads or non-slip pads to the undersides of decorative items or electronic devices placed on the furniture to prevent abrasion from sliding.

What you should avoid: abrasive cleaners, harsh chemical agents, or household items like rough sponges can damage the coating. Also, excessive moisture over time can cause the edges to swell.

I’m curious: do you mainly use the furniture in a living or work area, and do you have pets or children who might cause more wear and tear?

Thanks first of all for the detailed response! The furniture is in my bedroom, so a rather private area that’s not used constantly. I don’t have pets, but my partner does often move things on the furniture, and we also store books and items that we use frequently.

I was considering whether a matte transparent protective film might be advisable here, but I’m concerned it could negatively affect the appearance or peel off over time.

Are there specific brands or features to look out for? And do you have any experience with how long such films typically last?

Also, I’m curious whether home remedies like a thin layer of beeswax or polish would be useful here or if they might damage the surface instead.

Hello plonau,

I completely understand your concerns regarding the protective films. With Malm furniture, it is important that the protective measures fit well with the type of furniture.

About films:
I recommend special furniture films made of polyurethane or vinyl that are very thin and transparent. Brands like "Oraguard" offer protective films that are highly durable yet almost invisible. Make sure the film is scratch-resistant and can be removed without leaving any residue. With good care, the durability can be 2-3 years, sometimes even longer.

Application: It is important to apply the film without air bubbles and to thoroughly clean the surface before application.

Home remedies like beeswax or polish, I would recommend mainly for solid wood furniture. For melamine-coated surfaces, there is a risk that waxes or oils leave an unwanted layer that makes the surface greasy and attracts dirt more easily. Additionally, these products can cause discoloration of the coating over time.

For your case, the film solution combined with felt pads on all items placed on the furniture will probably work best.

If you like, I can also send you a brief guide on how to apply the film most effectively.

Oh, this topic is fantastic! 🙂

I also have Malm furniture myself, and since I started using those thin felt pads for my drawers, the risk of scratches has decreased significantly!

I also use small felt coasters for all decorative items and sometimes even for books, which makes a huge difference in daily use.

What really impressed me was discovering protective films, which I tried on my desk – they are barely visible, yet the surface remains protected! Simply great!

Give it a try, it’s definitely worth it! 🙂

In short:

- Attach felt pads to the bottom of all items.
- Do not use harsh cleaning agents.
- Avoid placing scratching objects on furniture.
- Use a clear, thin protective film on heavily used surfaces.

That's all it takes.
