Hello everyone,

I have a small issue with my KALLAX shelf from IKEA. I've been using it for some time in the garden, mainly on the patio, where it gets quite sunny and sometimes very hot – especially last summer with strong sunlight. I’ve noticed that the originally nice, bright white has gradually faded and become slightly yellowish.

Now I’m wondering if applying a UV protective film would help. Has anyone had experience with whether such a film is effective in preventing fading?

I understand that KALLAX is not really designed for outdoor use, but I would prefer not to have to bring it inside every time. Are there other ways to better protect the shelf from heat and UV radiation?

Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

Well, you can’t really expect long durability from furniture made of particleboard or MDF when used outdoors – it’s not surprising that the finish is deteriorating. The idea of a UV-protective film sounds reasonable at first, but I wonder: how practical is it to keep this kind of furniture outside at all?

Maybe it’s better to invest directly in weather-resistant furniture and use the KALLAX indoors instead. A film might only delay the problem, not solve it.

Think about it: how long do you think the film will last on the plastic surface of the KALLAX when exposed to constant heat and UV radiation? Will the adhesive remain sticky, or will it start to peel off?

Wow, it’s great that you’re using the KALLAX in your garden! 🙂 I think the idea of using UV film is excellent, especially since it can really help protect against long hours of sun exposure.

I would definitely give it a try. Some UV protection films are even self-adhesive and weather-resistant. This can at least slow down fading. These kinds of solutions are often quite affordable.

Get the shelving unit ready for next year—this way, you can use it a little longer without having to buy new outdoor furniture right away! Good luck! :-)

Before blindly sticking any films over it, you should check the material properties of the KALLAX. The frame is made of melamine-coated particleboard – the surface is durable but not UV-resistant.

UV films can partially filter sunlight, but it’s doubtful whether they can prevent brown discoloration or yellowing, which often result from thermal aging and oxidation of the material.

Additionally, if the film itself isn’t breathable, moisture could get trapped underneath, potentially causing further damage to the wood.

I think it makes more sense to use a combination of shade and occasional shielding. Does anyone have solid experience with UV films on outdoor furniture?

For reference:

KALLAX shelves are made from melamine-coated particleboard designed for indoor use. UV radiation can cause fading and discoloration, while heat accelerates aging.

UV protection films are generally effective if they provide sufficient UV blocking (at least 99% UV-A and UV-B filtration). However, there is no guarantee that the film will completely prevent fading, as thermal effects also play a role.

Important: The film must be suitable for outdoor use and weather-resistant. Additionally, the surface should be dry and clean before application to ensure durability.

I also recommend protecting the shelf during peak heat periods with a sunshade or awning. This can significantly extend its lifespan.

UV film can be helpful, but not all films are designed for this purpose. It’s best to buy a special weather-resistant film with UV protection and pay attention to customer reviews.
