I’m not just talking about short-term solutions like dusting or simple dust cloths, but effective methods or products that can prevent dust from building up in the compartments or on the shelves over a longer period (weeks or months).
I understand that the Kallax is open and there is naturally some risk of dust, but I’m curious if anyone has had good experiences with covers, special inserts, films, or other practical technical aids. I’m especially interested in whether the effort involved is worth the results and how maintenance-intensive such solutions are in everyday use.
Looking forward to your tips, experiences, or even critical assessments on this topic!

Hello, I completely understand how frustrating it is to constantly have dust in the Kallax shelves, even though you keep cleaning regularly. I personally struggled with open compartments for a long time and then tried various covers.
What helped me the most were simple acrylic sheets that I had custom-cut to size.
The great thing is that the dust stays out, but you can still clearly see what’s inside. It takes a bit of effort to fit them properly, but after that, they require almost no maintenance. I often feel relieved because I don’t have to constantly worry about everything getting dusty. However, it does take up some space since the panels stick out a bit, and installation requires a steady surface and some calm.
Covering with fabric works for short-term protection, but it’s not a long-term solution.

Hello, regarding the topic of permanent dust prevention in the Kallax, I would like to provide a more detailed response. Basically, there are three strategies:
1. Covers: As mentioned before, acrylic glass or plexiglass are very effective protective measures. Important: Check the exact dimensions of the compartments beforehand to get perfectly fitting covers.
2. Inserts with doors: There are suitable doors (wood or glass) available for Kallax that can be screwed on. While these do not completely prevent dust, they significantly reduce the amount.
3. Use of boxes/baskets: Dust is usually kept away when items are stored in closed containers. Kallax’s own fabric or plastic boxes are well suited for this.
It is important that all solutions are only effectively permanent if they fit well and are ideally wiped down regularly with a microfiber cloth.
What many do wrong is covering, but then reintroducing dust with open systems or unsuitable cloths.
Overall, a combination of precisely fitting covers and regular, but not too frequent cleaning is recommended.

Concrete facts about dust protection for the Kallax:
The Kallax shelf unit features open, unsealed compartments without doors or covers. Therefore, dust accumulation is technically unavoidable without a mechanical barrier.
To keep dust out permanently, the following applies:
- An airtight cover or door is necessary. This is not part of the original Kallax design but can be achieved with suitable accessories or custom solutions.
- Materials such as plexiglass or acrylic glass provide a smooth, dust-resistant surface, are easy to clean, and transparent.
- Dust protection with fabric boxes is limited, as dust can penetrate through the fabric fibers.
- Regular cleaning (at least monthly) remains essential if there is no fully enclosed solution.
It is clear that there is no simple, permanent, and completely dustproof solution without modifying components.

I can only agree with that. Dust is always a bit of an annoyance for me, especially with open shelving. I thought about it for a long time because I actually like the Kallax. But
Even though it costs a bit more, I believe investing in this is worth it to maintain a clean appearance over the long term.

The great thing about it is that the dust stays outside, but you can still see through
