Hello everyone, I am currently planning to equip our small kitchen with IKEA Metod cabinets and want to make the most efficient use of the existing but very limited space. My specific question is: What tips and strategies do you have for installing and arranging Metod cabinets in small kitchen spaces to maximize storage while maintaining freedom of movement and a smooth workflow? I am especially interested in whether there are particular combinations of cabinet sizes, drawer types, or interior fittings that have proven to be especially practical in tight conditions. If you have experience with modifications such as using corner solutions or making use of walls above the countertop, I would appreciate your input. Thanks in advance for your support!

In small kitchen spaces, careful planning of the floor plan is essential to use the area efficiently. The IKEA Metod system offers standardized cabinet widths (40, 60, and 80 cm (16, 24, and 32 inches)), so an optimal combination of smaller (40 cm (16 inches)) and medium-sized units (60 cm (24 inches)) is advisable to minimize unused space.

- Corner solutions with cabinets such as "Magic Corner" or carousel systems are especially useful for small kitchens with corners, as they unlock storage space that would otherwise be difficult to access.
- Vertical space should be utilized with wall cabinets extending up to the ceiling, preferably with fronts that open in a space-saving way, for example, folding doors instead of swing doors.
- Pull-out interior fittings (e.g., drawers with adjustable dividers) improve organization and accessibility in compact layouts.
- For the countertop, using modules with integrated sinks and cooktops is recommended to save space.

The focus should be on viewing the kitchen as a functional unit and designing storage so that it remains easily accessible without restricting freedom of movement.

These corner solutions can often be the key to increasing capacity in small kitchens. Additionally, I recommend taking precise measurements of the kitchen before purchasing and comparing the dimensions with your design in the IKEA planning software. This helps prevent unnecessary mistakes when buying.

It is also important to use storage space effectively not only in terms of width but also depth – while deeper cabinets may take up more room, good drawers or pull-outs ensure that everything remains easily accessible.

For very small kitchens, I also find open shelves or wall-mounted racks useful to keep frequently used items within reach without blocking valuable cabinet space.

One final tip: cabinet interiors can be customized with accessories like hanging baskets or adjustable dividers. This keeps the storage flexible and adaptable to changing needs.

Great question – in small kitchens, every centimeter (inch) really counts! 😊

I have a very compact kitchen myself and highly recommend using flexible interior fittings. With Metod, a lot can be done using drawers that can be freely divided – this helps avoid clutter in small cabinets.

Also: make use of wall cabinets all the way up to the ceiling! Store rarely used items on the top shelves and keep frequently needed things within easy reach below. For me, the tall fridge or tall cabinet combinations are fantastic – they create extra storage without getting in the way.

I’m also curious if you’ve considered smart corner solutions – they’re amazing! And very important: leave enough open space in front of work surfaces so you don’t feel cramped while cooking. Good luck with your setup!

I would like to qualify this statement a bit. Corner solutions such as “magic corners” or carousel systems can indeed be suitable for creating storage in hard-to-use spots, but their practicality for everyday use should be critically evaluated.

Often, these solutions are either expensive or – at least based on my experience – offer limited accessibility, which can be counterproductive in small kitchens where quick workflows are important. Instead, it may be more effective to rely on slim, tall pantry cabinets with well-designed internal pull-outs that provide direct access to items used daily.

Ergonomics should also be considered: those who want to minimize bending or reaching should favor cabinets positioned at waist to eye level.

My suggestion: when aiming to improve efficiency in small kitchens, less can be more – preferring smart, easily reachable storage, even if slightly less in capacity, rather than complex corner solutions that require extensive planning and maintenance.
