geir56Hello everyone,
I am currently working on repairing my IKEA Hemnes nightstand, where the drawer no longer closes properly. Since I don’t have detailed knowledge about this series, I am wondering: Are there reliable and clearly structured tutorial videos specifically for repairing IKEA Hemnes furniture? It’s important to me that these videos address common issues, such as readjusting drawer slides, replacing fittings, or fixing minor damage to the wooden parts. I am looking for tips that explain technical terms in an easy-to-understand way, as well as practical DIY solutions that don’t require special tools.
Who has experience with this or can recommend relevant videos?

Hey, geir56 – great question!
Fortunately, there are quite a few tutorial videos available that focus on repairing IKEA HEMNES furniture. 😄 Especially useful are the videos that cover common issues like sticking drawers as well as simple replacement parts. One advantage is that most of these tutorials present the steps clearly, so you can easily follow along even if you’re not an experienced carpenter.
I would recommend looking for videos that explain each assembly step in detail – IKEA furniture is often very modular. Sometimes you can also find videos where people share their own repair tips, which can be really helpful. Important: make sure the videos are up to date (IKEA occasionally changes designs) and preferably in German or with subtitles.
If you like, I can put together some links for you later (but it’s better not to share them here in the forum). Definitely worth checking out, as it often saves a lot of frustration and time!

I can only recommend paying attention to videos that explain each assembly step in great detailThat sounds reasonable at first, but I wonder how reliable these instructional videos really are. In some cases, repairs risk not being carried out properly if only amateur videos are used.
Are there any indications of how these tutorials were produced? For example, whether experts were involved or if they actually come from experienced DIY enthusiasts?
One could also consider whether it might be more sensible to carry out repairs using official IKEA materials – but those usually contain little to no repair instructions, mostly just assembly guides.
I’m also interested if anyone has experience with whether such videos really help or if they tend to confuse more, because some repair steps are more complex than a video might suggest.

From my experience, many of the HEMNES repair videos come from hobby DIYers trying to solve practical problems – but that doesn’t mean they are unreliable. Often, the techniques shown have been proven over many years and are presented with simple yet well-structured explanations.
I always recommend doing two things before starting a repair:
- Make sure the video has good ratings or positive feedback (for example, in the comments)
- Cross-check the tips in the video with the written information from IKEA (assembly instructions, FAQs)
For simple repairs like a “drawer sticking” or “replacing small wooden parts,” such videos are usually helpful because they guide you step by step and show which tools are useful. It can be helpful not to hesitate to watch the repair step two or three times to build confidence.
However, when it comes to load-bearing parts or complex mechanisms, I would advise consulting a professional. Still, these videos are a good starting point for initial attempts.
