Hello everyone,
I am currently exploring ways to customize my Ikea Hemnes furniture to make it more unique and of higher quality. I generally like the design, but many Hemnes pieces tend to look quite standard due to the typical white or natural wood finishes. Therefore, I am specifically looking for DIY tips to enhance these pieces and better match them to my home style without undertaking extensive restoration work like complete sanding or using expensive accessories.
Do you have experience with simple to moderate enhancement methods? Which materials (e.g., paints, stains, attachments) and techniques (painting, applying decals, modifying hardware) would you specifically recommend? I am also interested in potential pitfalls to avoid.
Thank you in advance for your advice!

great question! 😊 I think the Hemnes series is a solid base, but yes, adding a bit more character usually helps. What has worked well for me:
- First, a light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper (220 grit) – not too much, just enough to roughen the surface slightly.
- Then I like to use chalk paint, which is really easy to apply with a brush and creates a nice vintage look.
- It’s often worth replacing the handles with nicer ones made of metal or brass – it’s not expensive and gives a really elegant effect.
A little tip: After the chalk paint dries, you can apply wax on top to make the furniture less matte and well protected.
And don’t be afraid of paint – once you’ve done it, the piece looks completely transformed! 😎

It should be noted that Hemnes furniture is made from solid pine wood, which makes it easier to texture surfaces using oil or stain treatments. For a professional finish, it is important to ensure that the surface is clean and dust-free before applying paint or stain.
The following structured steps are recommended:
- Sanding the surfaces (fine sandpaper, 180–220 grit)
- Removing sanding dust with a damp cloth
- Applying a wood primer (especially with light-colored primers)
- Painting or staining with sufficient drying time between coats
Replaceable handles are a common way to change the style. Installing glass inserts in doors, if feasible, can also enhance the appearance of the furniture. It is advisable to do a test run on an inconspicuous area before starting the project to avoid unwanted effects.

I can confirm the advice regarding sanding and refinishing, but I would like to add a few technical details that are especially useful for Hemnes furniture. The surface is factory-coated with a lightly pore-filling lacquer, which makes stripping more difficult.
Important:
- Before sanding, it’s recommended to test the thickness of the lacquer on the back or an edge. If it’s too thick, chemical stripping can sometimes be more effective, but this is a more involved process.
- When choosing paint: chalk paints work well but are not extremely durable. For furniture used daily, I recommend sealing with a transparent furniture wax or a matte polyurethane varnish after the paint has dried.
- For minor repairs (e.g., scratches, dents), use wood filler or wax sticks matching the base material before treatment.
Have you considered covering the back panels of the furniture with leftover wallpaper or fabric? This can be a very individual and surprisingly simple way to enhance Hemnes furniture.

Implementation:
- Thin, self-adhesive LED strips (warm white) work well with USB power supply or battery-operated versions.
- Simple wiring and occasional battery replacements naturally need to be considered.
I can only agree – often it’s these small details that make the difference.
In conclusion: a well-planned mix of small changes – color, fittings, lighting – creates, in my view, the most beautiful upgrade.
