Hello everyone,
I am currently considering buying a BILLY bookshelf from IKEA, but I have a somewhat unusual question: Is it really possible to assemble a BILLY bookshelf completely without any tools? I am asking because I don’t have the right tools at home and would prefer not to buy new ones if it can be avoided.
I know that the BILLY bookshelf is usually assembled using clamps, screwdrivers, and possibly a hammer, but some IKEA furniture now offers tool-free solutions or at least simple snap-fit systems.
Does anyone have experience or know from the instructions whether the BILLY bookshelf can be fully assembled without any tools at all, or is that unrealistic? If not, what is the minimum set of tools really needed?
I would appreciate any informed experiences or tips on how to best approach this project without having to invest in expensive assembly tools. Thanks in advance!

Hey FINEO,
I’ve assembled the BILLY shelf countless times, and yes, you basically need tools—at least a screwdriver, preferably a Phillips head. The screws are already tight and can’t be turned by hand.
Unfortunately, no, it won’t work without any tools, but it’s not too complicated. A regular screwdriver is enough, and usually there’s a small Allen key included, but that won’t replace all the screws.
If by “no tools” you mean you don’t have anything in your toolbox, you might be able to avoid some effort with a bit of creativity. You can slot in large parts like the side panels, but the back panel is attached with nails, which you’ll need to tap in.
I once tried using pliers, but it wasn’t any easier than using the proper tools.
My recommendation: Borrow a screwdriver for 5 minutes or buy a cheap small one for about 2-3 euros. It’ll save you a lot of frustration! 🙂

Hello FINEO,
I can agree with meGreg and would like to add a bit more, as I have assembled the shelf in various versions quite often.
The BILLY shelf is certainly one of IKEA’s classics, but it is not completely made with snap-fit connections. Most joints are made with screws, dowels, and nails. For example, the small nails for the back panel need to be hammered in; you can’t do that without a hammer.
So, assembling it entirely without tools—if you look closely—is not feasible.
You can try to put the shelf together in a very minimal way by at least having a sturdy board next to you to tap with, and attempt to replace a hammer with firm objects (e.g., a heavy book, a solid item). However, this only works if you are very careful not to cause damage.
Screws will also be very hard to turn without a screwdriver. Maybe a sturdy coin or household item could work, but that quickly becomes very tiresome and is not very safe.
My advice: get at least a small screwdriver and, if possible, a hammer before you start—the investment is worth it in the long run, as you will use these tools again and again.
IKEA’s instructions do not offer an official alternative to using tools because it is assumed that tools are standard.
I hope this helps you.

Hello everyone and hi FINEO,
I find this topic quite interesting! With the BILLY shelf, it’s not just about screws, but also the back panel, which is nailed in place. This part definitely requires some tool power.
I agree with that – it can’t really be done completely tool-free. However, if you really want to use the bare minimum, you could theoretically use a coin or something similar to turn the screws; the key is to hold it firmly.
As for the back panel, I once managed by using a thick book as a base and a rolling pin to tap it in – it worked, but of course it’s not ideal.
So if you improvise, it might be possible, but it’s not very comfortable. If you can borrow a small hammer or screwdriver, I’d recommend doing it that way—it saves hassle and protects your nerves.
Good luck, whatever you decide! 🙂
