Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to add an LED light strip to my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit to better illuminate the interior compartment. I am particularly interested in recommendations regarding suitable types of LEDs that work well for mounting on the KALLAX without affecting the power supply or the overall functionality.

It is important to me that the LED strip is easy to install, looks unobtrusive, and ideally can be powered via a power adapter (avoiding constant battery changes). Are there specific models or brands that have proven reliable among KALLAX users?

Additionally, I would appreciate tips on wiring (for example, hidden along the sides or back panels), mounting options, and whether dimmable lighting solutions are advisable.

Who has experience with such modifications and can share their insights? Thanks for your support!

Hi Elmir,

I also installed LED light strips on my KALLAX and can tell you that flexible 12V LED strips work really well. Popular options are Philips Hue or affordable versions from LIFX if you want smart home lighting. Otherwise, simple LED strips with a power supply work fine.

I glued the strips onto the back panel, so you mainly see the light and not the strip itself. It creates a nice effect and provides good illumination, especially for books or decorations. Dimming is super convenient, especially if you want to use the light to create ambiance. 🙂

I’ll expand on that:

For installation on the back of the KALLAX unit, LED strips with a self-adhesive backing work well, which you can simply stick on. You can route the cables along the inside edges, neatly secured with cable clips. Power supplies are available in small and compact sizes that can be easily positioned near the shelving unit.

I have had good experiences with brands like Govee because they are affordable and offer excellent everyday quality. For just a few dollars more, choose products with CE marking and good reviews, especially for safety when connected to the mains power.

If you want dimming functionality, choose a model with a remote control; that works really well.

Interesting topic, Elmir.

At first, I was a bit hesitant since I’m not much of a DIY person, but upgrading the KALLAX with LED strips went quite smoothly. It really helped to carefully plan the cable routing; otherwise, it quickly gets messy.

I can confirm that this makes everything look tidy, and the light spreads evenly inside the shelf.

Especially when the shelf is placed in a recess, the warm LED lighting really looks great.

I also tried a version with color change, but classic warm white feels cozier and more comfortable in the long run.

As an addition:

For installation on the KALLAX, I recommend LED strips with 12-volt direct current. The 230 V supply directly at the shelf is rarely accessible and not safe.

Technically, the strips should provide sufficient brightness of about 300–500 lumens per meter to properly illuminate the inside of the shelf.

The wiring should be kept as short as possible to avoid voltage drop.

Cable clips or self-adhesive cable channels allow for neat routing, ideally on the back or hidden under the shelf board.

Dimmable versions increase user comfort, but compatibility with the controller must be checked beforehand.

Use LED strips with 12V and a power supply. Self-adhesive strips are easy to install. Secure wiring with cable clips. Dimmer or remote control can be added if desired. Done.
