Hello everyone, I am currently planning my new kitchen with IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets and was wondering how to best design the lighting. I am especially interested in creating a pleasant ambient lighting while also providing functional task lighting for the work surfaces that can be well integrated into the cabinets. I am looking for advice on the most suitable type of lighting (e.g., LED strips, spotlights), their positioning, and control options such as sensors or switches. It would also be helpful to know if there are any specific products or solutions that work particularly well with the Metod system. I’m not looking for a basic light installation but rather a smart and durable solution that enhances the kitchen’s appearance and makes everyday use easier. How have you illuminated your Metod kitchens, and what experiences have you had?

Hello Marcus, your question is very well formulated! LED strips and LED spotlights work particularly well with IKEA Metod cabinets because they produce little heat and are easy to integrate. For the main lighting under the wall cabinets, I recommend flexible LED strips that you can install directly in the work area – they provide even lighting on the countertop. Spotlights are better for accents and highlighting specific areas. It is also important to choose dimmable options to adjust the lighting atmosphere flexibly.

For control, many use push buttons, dimmers, or motion sensors; the latter work well in cabinets with slight movement. Make sure to have good cable management; you might also be able to use IKEA’s integration kit designed for Metod, which allows for clean installation. If you want, I can go into more detail about the specific advantages and disadvantages.

I can only agree with Brian—LED strips are definitely the best choice under the Metod wall cabinets, especially because they are very slim. I also had problems with the wiring at first since I often moved the cabinets during installation. My tip: pre-install the cables and use connectors; this makes later adjustments much easier.

Regarding color temperature: I recommend warm white (around 2700 to 3000K) for a cozy atmosphere, but for work surfaces, neutral white (about 4000K) can be better since it helps distinguish colors more clearly.

For control: a simple on/off switch directly on the kitchen is good, but I find motion sensors a bit tricky for kitchen cabinets since they don’t always trigger reliably. Simple push buttons often work best.

For additional information: When choosing lighting for Metod kitchen cabinets, energy efficiency and LED lifespan are crucial factors, especially for continuous lighting. Look for products with a high color rendering index (CRI > 80), as this improves the color accuracy of food and work materials.

Installation is usually done either with self-adhesive LED strips or specially pre-made brackets in IKEA kitchens. For a clean appearance, it is recommended to install the light source behind a cover panel or in a shadow gap, if possible.

Regarding control options: multi-position switches or relays with dimming functions are now easily compatible with smart home systems – this can add value if you plan to use voice control or programmable scenes later on.

Hey Marcus! I find this topic really interesting! I installed smart LED strips under my Metod upper cabinets. Not only does it look great, but it also makes cooking much more enjoyable!

What helped me a lot:
- Warm to neutral white depending on the work area
- Dimmable, so it’s cozier in the evening
- Motion sensor – yes, I know it can be tricky, but it works perfectly for me!

Be careful when routing the cables! It’s worth making a sketch first and consulting an electrician or a similar professional beforehand. I strained myself at the beginning because everything was too tight inside the cabinet 😀 But the effort is definitely worth it!

Thank you for the many helpful insights so far. I initially wondered how to achieve a comfortable “work light wave” in the kitchen without it being too harsh or too diffused.

I found that both very important and challenging at the same time. I wondered if it makes sense to create different lighting zones, for example, bright LED strips directly on the work surfaces and warmer ambient lighting in other areas. Or have you found mixed color temperatures to be distracting?

I believe that especially with Metod cabinet combinations, integrating the lighting should be part of the design, not just a functional “add-on.” I would greatly appreciate any experiences, including possible compatibility issues with IKEA’s own solutions.
