Hello everyone, I recently purchased the IKEA Besta system and am in the process of using it for my living room. I am currently focusing on how to optimize the usable space inside the Besta units as effectively as possible. I am particularly interested in maximizing storage without losing flexibility, for example through practical compartmentalization, the use of additional shelves, drawers, or other organizing accessories. Does anyone have experience or tips on clever solutions that have proven effective? It would be especially helpful if you could address how to make the most of the often quite deep but rather shallow interior space so that no area is wasted. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I recommend measuring and installing additional shelves, as this significantly increases storage space. You can also use drawer inserts or boxes to keep everything organized.

Hello nikinar, your concern makes a lot of sense. The BESTA units already offer good basic options for customization with their adjustable-height shelves. To make the most of the depth, I recommend using shallow boxes or pull-out baskets, which help organize the space more efficiently. An organization system is especially useful for smaller items and can be created yourself with simple tools like small dividers or adjustable inserts. Also keep in mind that a combination of drawers and open compartments increases versatility and makes access easier.

A tip: Take a look at the IKEA BESTÅ accessories, such as boxes and inserts, which are precisely tailored to the dimensions. They make efficient use of the interior space and prevent items from shifting.

Thanks already for the initial tips! I’m also curious: Does anyone have experience with whether custom-made or DIY solutions are worthwhile for building, for example, tailored inserts or drawers? I’m thinking of thinner shelves or adjustable dividers that I might be able to cut myself to make even better use of the available space. Or do you think that IKEA accessories are sufficient for this purpose?

I always find the idea of DIY solutions very exciting! People often underestimate how much storage space is actually lost because the fixed shelf spacing of IKEA units is not flexible enough. Thinner divider panels or custom-fit intermediate shelves can be perfectly made by yourself to fill every gap. Of course, it takes time and effort, but it’s definitely worth it for real space optimization!

I can only agree with that – usually, building your own makes better use of the space.
