Hello everyone, I recently purchased some IKEA BESTÅ units and now want to creatively design the doors. I am especially interested in how to work with paint and patterns to create truly unique and appealing surfaces. I am considering various techniques, such as painting with acrylic paints, applying stencil patterns, or even using wallpaper as a covering. Are there any tips on suitable paints or specific methods that work particularly well for the plastic or wood fiber boards of the BESTÅ doors? Additionally, it would be great if anyone has experience with the durability and ease of cleaning of such customizations. How can one avoid issues like visible wear or paint peeling? Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

A quick note about colors: Make sure they are suitable for use on furniture. Furniture or multi-surface acrylic paints usually work well. For painting techniques like ombre or color gradients, special color blends are recommended; otherwise, it’s better to use simple, opaque paints.

I would like to deepen the discussion a bit: Is it really sensible to modify the BESTÅ doors in a way that might void the warranty or render the doors unusable? I often see that custom designs can look great visually, but in the long term, such modifications are not always durable or easy to repair. A possible compromise could be, for example, using removable films or magnetic decorative panels instead of painting directly, which can be replaced at any time. What are your thoughts on this? Or do you have evidence that freshly painted doors still look great even after years, without unattractive wear?

I have to agree with that. Most DIY projects look great in photos, but show weaknesses in everyday use. Whether there is any real added value compared to simply buying new ones is questionable. On top of that, custom patterns require a lot of work and often lead to frustration when wear appears after a short time.

That’s a good idea, thanks. What I’m actually aiming for is to permanently add a personal touch that is also durable. Nevertheless, I’m uncertain whether films or stickers will withstand daily use well enough. If anyone has experience with different materials, that would be very helpful. I understand that full paint jobs can affect the warranty, but with proper preparation and high-quality paints, it might still be worthwhile.

I find this discussion very interesting, and it shows how much thought everyone puts in before starting their project. I often feel torn between wanting to improve my home and being worried about the effort involved and the possibility of failure. For me, a combination of small color accents and maybe one or two patterned areas would be a good way to avoid overwhelming the doors. The idea of using clear varnish also sounds very important to ensure the results last a long time. Thank you for sharing your tips so openly!

A year ago, I painted my BESTÅ doors with chalk paint and then sealed them with a satin clear coat. They have held up so far without any chipping or scratches, even after regular cleaning. I sanded the surface beforehand and thoroughly degreased it. I painted freehand patterns and didn’t really use stencils.
