I
Ibrahimron4 Apr 2020 18:24Hello everyone, I am currently having an issue with the drawers of my IKEA Hemnes sideboard. During assembly, I noticed that the drawers do not fit properly into the guided recesses as expected. The drawers are very difficult to slide in or they sit completely crooked. I have checked whether the rails are mounted correctly, and everything seems to be installed according to the instructions. My question is: What can I specifically do if the IKEA HEMNES drawers do not fit? Are there known adjustments, measurements to check, or special tricks to make the drawers fit properly? I would appreciate any experiences and advice, as the piece of furniture is otherwise great but, of course, not functional without properly fitting drawers. Thank you in advance!

The drawers are very difficult to slide in or are completely misaligned. This issue often indicates an inaccurate installation of the drawer slides. First, I recommend checking them as follows:
- Use a square to verify that the slides are exactly parallel to each other and to the cabinet body.
- Make sure no screws are either too tight or too loose, as this can affect the movement.
- Check whether the drawers themselves are warped. Sometimes, gently sanding the sides of the drawer with fine-grit sandpaper helps.
If everything is correctly installed, you may need to fine-tune the slides or runners—many IKEA models have small adjustment options on the metal guides.
Another tip: before inserting the drawer, lightly lubricate the slides with silicone or ceramic grease. This greatly reduces friction.
If the problem persists despite all these steps, replacing the hardware could be considered, as manufacturing tolerances are rare but possible.

Sometimes it’s just a bit too much enthusiasm when screwing – I’ve found that it’s better to fine-tune first before wondering why everything doesn’t fit perfectly.
Also: Maybe you installed the drawer the wrong way around? I once swapped the drawer front on my HEMNES sideboard and wondered why it was sticking. Approach it patiently, and it will work! 👍

Are there any known adjustments or special tips for measuring to ensure the drawers fit properly?Regarding measurements:
- Check the height, width, and depth of the drawers and compare them with the dimensions of the cabinet cutouts. For HEMNES, the instructions specify tolerances that must be strictly followed.
- Also, measure the exact position of the screw holes for the drawer slides. Any deviations here will cause the drawer not to fit correctly.
- Make sure the drawer sides are always flush and parallel, as slight misalignments can significantly hinder smooth sliding.
As for a tip: If a side panel is slightly too wide, sanding it down can help. Minor deviations are common, especially with wooden furniture.
If you reach the limits of adjustment, replacing damaged parts is the best way to ensure long-term functionality.
