Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into the materials used in the Ikea Brimnes furniture, as I am planning to purchase some pieces soon and value sustainable and durable products. I am particularly interested in which types of wood or wood-based materials are used, whether any metal or plastic components are incorporated, and how the surface finishes are treated. Are there any indications regarding environmental impact or the presence of potential harmful substances in the materials? It would be helpful to have as detailed information as possible about the materials used, preferably from reliable sources or personal experience.

Can anyone provide insights or has already analyzed the materials? Thanks in advance!

Hello mune33,

I can share quite a bit with you, as I recently looked closely at the Ikea BRIMNES furniture series. In general, most parts of this series are made from wood-based materials, mainly particleboard and MDF (medium-density fiberboard).

- The load-bearing components and large panels are usually made from particleboard, which is wood chips pressed under heat and pressure. It is cost-effective and provides good stability.
- The fronts and visible surfaces often use MDF, which is smoother and finer, making it suitable for paint or foil coatings.
- The surfaces are typically coated with a melamine film or painted, making them more resistant to moisture and scratches.
- For the back panels and interior linings, you often find thinner particleboard or hardboard panels.
- Metal is mainly used for fittings, hinges, screws, and sometimes as drawer runners.

Regarding environmental friendliness, you should know that Ikea generally uses materials that comply with applicable European standards, meaning formaldehyde emissions are strictly limited. There are also mentions of FSC certifications, which guarantee sustainable forestry practices.

Are there any specific details you need or particular pieces from the series you want information about?

Hey mune33,

"I'm especially interested in which types of wood or wood-based materials are used, whether metal or plastic components are integrated, and what the surface treatment looks like."

You phrased this question really precisely! 😎 I just wanted to add that, especially with the BRIMNES series, the plastic feet are often mentioned – they are usually made of ABS plastic, which is quite durable and helps prevent scratches on the floor. Also, the drawer slides are mostly made of steel, which improves stability and smooth operation.

What I personally like: the combination of particleboard for the structure and MDF for the visible parts keeps the price very reasonable without making it feel cheap.

A small side note: when assembling, you should carefully check the parts with markings, as sometimes the melamine coating on the edges can be a bit fragile. But hey, you get what you pay for. 😄

If you like, I can also share from my own experience how the materials hold up in everyday use.

This question already covers the essentials quite well, and I would like to go into a bit more detail.

The BRIMNES series is classically positioned by Ikea as an affordable product line, so the materials are designed for a good cost-benefit ratio. The main materials can be divided into the following categories:

- Load-bearing structure: Ikea mainly uses particleboard here, which, due to its combination of wood particles, adhesives (mostly resins), and high pressing pressure, is cost-effective yet load-bearing. Keep in mind that particleboard is more susceptible to moisture, which can be relevant when storing or using it in damp rooms.

- Fronts & visible elements: These are usually made of MDF, which provides a finer surface. MDF is ideal for painting or applying foil finishes – both are used in BRIMNES to achieve a stylish white lacquer appearance or textured foil on the furniture.

- Surface coating: The melamine or foil coverings are very resistant to scratches and moisture, but damage to the surface can quickly expose the material underneath, so care and caution are advised when handling and cleaning.

- Metal components: Hinges, screws, drawer slides are made of steel, mostly galvanized or powder-coated to prevent corrosion.

- Plastics: Mainly used for feet, stoppers, and sometimes as connecting or impact parts. The plastic used is usually ABS or polypropylene, both fairly robust and durable.

A note on environmental compatibility: Ikea strives for sustainability, which is also reflected in the use of FSC-certified wood-based materials. However, particleboard contains adhesives that may emit formaldehyde. Ikea ensures that emission levels are well below the legally prescribed limits.

If you have specific product numbers, we could also check whether the product descriptions or technical datasheets provide additional information.

What kind of environment do you plan to use it in? Is it a high-humidity room, or intended as bedroom or living room furniture?
