ᐅ What should be done if the door hinges break on a BILLY unit?

Hello everyone, I noticed that the door hinges on my Billy bookshelf have broken. The doors barely close anymore, and it seems like the load was too heavy. My question is: What should be done if the door hinges on a BILLY bookshelf break? Are there replacement parts or repair options available, or is it better to buy completely new hinges? I would also like to know if anyone has experience installing these hinges, as I’m unsure if I can do it myself. Thank you in advance!

The hinges have torn off at the mounting point, meaning the metal mechanism is partially broken, and on one side the wood screws have also pulled out.

In a case like this, it is important to first stabilize the damaged wood area. The best way to do this is by removing small wood chips, filling the holes with wood glue, and reinforcing them with wood filler or small wooden dowels. After the glue has dried, you can reattach the hinges using thinner screws or special wood repair screws.

If the wood is severely damaged, a small wood patch (a precisely cut wood strip) can be glued on with wood glue and sanded down once dry. This creates a new solid base for the screws.

I also recommend buying the hinges directly from IKEA, as they are specifically designed to fit the Billy system.

Exactly, and if that doesn’t hold, try a furniture repair kit or even Moltofill, which fills the holes very well.

Hey, that sounds frustrating at first, but you can definitely manage it! 🙂 I once did something similar: filled holes with wood glue and toothpicks, re-screwed it, and the doors were perfect again. You can do it too! It’s worth repairing the shelf because BILLY is just incredibly versatile! Good luck with the screwing! 🙂

After careful analysis, repairing the door hinges on a BILLY shelf is considered practical if the mounting points in the wood are only minimally damaged. The optimal procedure would be:

- Replacement of the original IKEA hinges
- Preparation of the mounting surfaces by removing loose wood fibers
- Filling damaged screw holes with wood filler or wood glue and wooden dowels
- Use of appropriately sized screws for reinstallation
- Adjustment of the hinges after installation to ensure proper door movement

If the wood is heavily frayed or broken, the repair may become uneconomical depending on the extent of the damage, and replacement of the door parts or the entire shelf should be considered.

This is an important point. Sometimes it is better to replace the entire door rather than spend a lot of time on a fragile repair. It is important not to stress yourself too much and to take breaks when needed.

Great feedback so far! I will proceed as follows:

1. Order original hinges from IKEA
2. Repair wood damage with wood glue and small wooden dowels
3. Install hinges using the appropriate screws

If the damage is too extensive, I’m considering getting a new door. Are there any alternative or improved hinge options for BILLY that are more durable? Or is it always best to use the original parts?
