Hello everyone, I am considering using my IKEA Besta shelving unit as a DIY workbench and would like to hear your opinions and experiences. Specifically, I am interested in how to improve its stability, which materials are suitable for a work surface, and whether the Besta system is even appropriate for more heavy-duty workshop tasks or if it is too fragile for that. I am also looking for tips on how to optimally combine storage and workspace without having to buy expensive workbenches. Looking forward to constructive feedback!

The Besta shelf is not really designed for use as a workbench. To use it as a workbench, I recommend attaching a sturdy worktop to it and securing the modules together to prevent wobbling.

For the countertop, you can choose multiplex plywood or a thick MDF board. Screw the board firmly onto the shelving unit. For additional stability, attach real feet or metal brackets underneath.

I share that concern, but maybe it’s suitable for lighter tasks. How do you handle the load capacity issue? Based on your experience, how much weight do you think the structure can support?

The Besta system made from IKEA shelves is primarily designed for living spaces, so its load capacity is not sufficient for heavy machinery or strong hammering. For craftwork and light assembly tasks, it is quite suitable. I recommend reinforcing the worktop with sturdy cross braces and screwing the modules together to prevent wobbling.

I think the idea is good, especially when you have limited space and budget. It’s understandable that you can’t always invest in an expensive workbench. However, you should be honest that when it comes to heavy-duty work, the stability can only be improved to a certain extent. Maybe start with lighter tasks first and see how the shelf holds up.
