Hello everyone, a few months ago I assembled my IKEA Metod kitchen and overall, I’m satisfied. However, the drawers don’t have a soft-close function, which has become quite bothersome because the drawers slam loudly and sometimes forcefully.

My question is: How can I retrofit IKEA Metod drawers with soft-close mechanisms?

I’d like to know exactly which parts I need, whether they are easy to install without having to remove the fronts extensively, if there are different types of soft-close systems that are compatible, and what I should pay attention to when upgrading, especially regarding load capacity and long-term durability.

If anyone has experience with this retrofit, I would really appreciate tips, a photo guide, or at least a step-by-step explanation. Thanks in advance!

You need the IKEA soft-close dampers specifically designed for Metod drawers. Simply remove the old runners, attach the dampers to the rail, and reinsert them. The front does not need to be removed, as the system is identical.

I’m happy to provide a brief guide on how to retrofit the soft-close feature for IKEA Metod drawers:

- First, you should obtain the appropriate soft-close dampers from IKEA designed specifically for Metod drawers. Make sure they match the width and depth of your drawers.
- Next, pull the drawer fully out and place it on a flat surface.
- Remove the old side rails, which is easiest by pressing the clips on the sliding mechanisms.
- Now install the soft-close runners in place of the old ones. It’s important to fit them flush and level to ensure proper function.
- Finally, reinsert the drawer. Note: The first time you close it, it may feel a bit stiff since the damper is new.

It is important to proceed carefully during the retrofit to avoid misaligning the dampers. If the drawer front appears slightly misaligned after installation, you can adjust it using the built-in adjustment options on the fittings.

This is how I retrofitted my Metod drawers and improved the overall durability of my kitchen.

Great that you’re interested in retrofitting the soft-close feature! 😃 It really makes a difference in everyday use and gives your kitchen a much more refined feel. I had the exact same issue and was initially doubtful whether it was even possible – but it definitely is!

A little tip: patience and attention to detail are very important, even though it can be a bit tricky at first. The “new” dampers from IKEA fit perfectly, and with some patience, it’s a great project that’s really enjoyable. If you have any questions or get stuck at any step, feel free to ask!

Retrofitting soft-close is relatively simple: order the Ikea soft-close mechanism, remove the old drawer slides, install the dampers, and reset the drawer. No need to remove the front panel.

For retrofitting soft-close mechanisms on IKEA Metod drawers, I recommend the following:

- Purchase original IKEA soft-close parts, as they are perfectly matched to the system and ensure long-term functionality.
- Avoid modifications using universal dampers, since they often do not fit precisely and can affect the mechanism.
- To remove the old runners, use flat screwdrivers or special clip release tools for a clean disassembly.
- After installation, ensure correct alignment so that the drawers close smoothly without jamming.

External factors such as drawer deformations can otherwise damage the dampers or render them ineffective.

Good luck!
