Hello everyone, I am planning to build custom drawer inserts for my Ikea Besta cabinets to improve storage organization. Unfortunately, I can hardly find any detailed guides that address the dimensions and specific features of the Besta system. My question is: which materials and tools are best suited for DIY drawer inserts that are sturdy yet flexible enough to efficiently sort items like cutlery, documents, or small parts? I am also interested in how to make the inserts fit precisely without affecting the drawer’s functionality. A few tips on cutting dimensions, fastening options, or surface treatments would be very helpful.

Making your own drawer inserts for Ikea Besta can be easily done using materials that are easy to work with, such as plywood or MDF. These provide a sturdy base and can be cut with precision. For the construction, at least a circular saw or jigsaw, sandpaper, and a cordless drill should be available. The measurements should ideally be based on the interior dimensions of the Besta drawers, so measure the width, depth, and height accurately in millimeters and add about 2 mm (0.08 inches) clearance for movement. The inserts are usually secured simply by placing them in, but small metal or plastic stoppers can sometimes be attached to prevent slipping. For surface treatment, a waterproof coating is recommended to ensure durable and easy-to-maintain inserts.

I can confirm that plywood is very sturdy, but if you prefer something lighter, foam boards are an option, especially if you only want to organize lightweight items. It’s also important to create a detailed plan beforehand, maybe with a sketch, showing how many compartments you need and their sizes. This way, you save both material and labor.

Regarding surface finishes: you can also use contact film, which is easy to apply and protects the wood additionally. If you want an even simpler solution, DIY organizers made from acrylic glass are available, which can be cut to size, but that comes down to budget.

That’s a good tip, thanks! I’m just wondering how precise I should make the measurements – the Besta drawers have very tight clearances, and I want to avoid my custom inserts from rubbing or blocking the drawer. Does anyone have experience with how tight the tolerance can be? 1 mm (0.04 inch), 2 mm (0.08 inch)? Or more? Also, which surface treatment offers the best protection against moisture if you occasionally store damp items inside?

A clearance of at least 1.5 to 2 mm (0.06 to 0.08 inches) on all sides of the drawer is recommended to ensure sufficient movement. Besta drawers use quite precise runners, so the housing should neither be too tight to avoid jamming nor too loose to prevent slipping.

For surface treatment: a thin layer of clear lacquer or a waterproof acrylic resin-based coating is ideal. This protects the wood from moisture while providing a smooth, easy-to-maintain surface that is less prone to discoloration or mold.

If anyone wonders how to assemble comparatively thin wooden panels precisely and permanently: I recommend using tongue-and-groove joints or small biscuit joints, which can be made with the help of a biscuit joiner. This makes the construction more stable and allows the individual compartments to be fitted together accurately.

Regarding stability: If a smooth surface is important, sanding and finishing work can be completed with fine-grit sandpaper, followed by a treatment with acrylic paint. This not only provides a good appearance but also creates a surface resistant to moisture.
