FusanHello everyone,
I am currently planning the installation of my new Ikea Metod kitchen and have a specific challenge: I want to add an extra countertop that not only matches the kitchen visually but is also ergonomically practical.
Therefore, my question is: What is the best way to build an Ikea Metod kitchen with an additional countertop area? Which modules and constructions are suitable to create extra workspace and possibly space for appliances or a small breakfast nook? Are there any tips for stable assemblies or smart extensions using the Metod base cabinets and countertops?
I already have the standard base cabinets and wall cabinets, but I want to significantly extend the countertop area, possibly as a corner setup or as an island connected to the existing run.
I would greatly appreciate any helpful advice, including on fastening materials or screw connections!

Hello Fusan,
I would recommend adding an extra countertop on sideboards or BEKVÄM stools. Metod base cabinets can be connected with fittings and extended with a matching countertop. Corner solutions can be achieved with IKEA corner units or by using custom-cut countertops.

Hi Fusan,
if you want extra countertop space, you can also build a small butcher block or a kitchen island using the Metod frame. It is important to secure the countertop properly. IKEA also offers suitable rails and brackets to fasten the countertops.
Additionally, pay attention to the height to ensure everything remains ergonomic.

Hello Fusan,
I think your question is very practical because many Ikea Metod kitchens are quite versatile, but there is often a lack of additional workspace. As a rule, you should first accurately measure the available space.
Then you can consider whether you want a freestanding island or to extend the existing kitchen run with additional cabinets. The Metod series is modular, so you can, for example, place economical base cabinets side by side and connect them with a suitable worktop.
For worktops, in addition to standard colors, there are also custom-cut options that you can adjust to create, for example, a small overhang or a corner section.
Stability is important to consider: the worktop should rest fully on the base cabinets to prevent sagging, especially if it has longer dimensions. Additional supports or legs can help here. Special brackets are also useful for an attached work surface as a small bar or breakfast counter.
If you like, I can also give you tips on installation, such as how to properly align and securely connect the cabinets.

I built a small “island” by combining two base cabinets side by side, and I also added a metal support beam between the legs—better safe than sorry! Something to consider 😉
Also, an extra work surface can really make everyday kitchen tasks easier. If you need more space, try adding a pull-out table. With the right rails, it’s quite simple and looks great too! As flexible as a Swiss Army knife kitchen.
