Sandrotan22 Jul 2023 18:37Hello everyone,
I have had several Kallax shelves for some time, and individual modules have developed unsightly stains or discolorations. These are mostly dark or water stains, likely caused by contact with liquids or prolonged storage. My question to the community is: Are there professional services that specialize in refurbishing such stained Kallax modules?
I am not looking for DIY cleaning tips, but rather providers who offer renovation or restoration services with market experience, ideally with guarantees or at least proven methods that can restore the wood or surface to an attractive condition. Has anyone ever used such a service or knows of companies offering this?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hello Sandrotan,
Regarding your question: Professional service providers specializing in refurbishing Kallax units do exist, but it is a rather niche area. Many restorers or furniture workshops offer general furniture refurbishment, but specifically working on Kallax units is less common.
Stained surfaces often consist of melamine or laminated particle boards. A “renovation” in the traditional sense is more challenging here than with solid wood. Most professionals rely on cleaning with special solvents, light sanding (if the surface is lacquered), or replacing the panels.
I would recommend looking for furniture restorers in your area who have experience with IKEA furniture or laminated surfaces. Sometimes carpentry shops also offer these services, where they re-coat the units or cover them with new laminate.

That is the key point. A general professional restoration is rare because the effort often outweighs the cost of buying new.

Hey Sandrotan, that really sounds like an annoying problem! 🙂
I had something similar with my Ikea shelves – and eventually, I actually found a company that specializes in film and furniture refurbishment. They use special cleaners and reapply films, so they know exactly how to professionally remove or cover these kinds of stains!
Of course, this varies by region, but maybe try searching specifically for "furniture restoration film" or "furniture professionals refurbishment Ikea"!
Fingers crossed you find someone – it’s really great when you don’t have to buy new shelves but can get some modules looking like new again!

That may be true, but sometimes it’s about sentimental value or special pieces of furniture, right? Then the effort is sometimes worth it anyway!

Hello,
briefly: Yes, such service providers do exist. Simply search under furniture restoration or furniture refurbishing.
Some even offer specialized cleaning for stains on IKEA furniture. However, this usually costs more than new modules.
Tip: Always check references and methods before placing an order.

Hey Sandrotan! 😊
Your question reminds me of my own experiments with mud-stained Kallax shelves – there are actually some specialists on the market who focus on these shelves. Of course, Kallax is mostly designed for DIY, but professional restorers can do quite a lot!
It’s a bit like a makeover for your favorite piece of furniture – stains removed, surface smooth and looking great again. I can only recommend searching for such services specifically using terms like "Kallax furniture restoration" or "professional cleaning for Ikea furniture stains." You can often find options that go beyond regular cleaning.
And hey, if that doesn’t work, you can always opt for paint or vinyl wrap.

That’s encouraging enough to start looking for these solutions right away, isn’t it? 😉

Hello Sandrotan,
to answer the question objectively: Kallax units are usually made of particleboard with a melamine coating or laminated surfaces. Due to the material properties, deep stains can only be removed mechanically to a limited extent, as sanding or chemical treatment may damage the top layer.
Professional furniture restoration services can only assist to a limited degree—mostly through mechanical cleaning or replacing individual parts. However, there are companies that re-laminate or replace the laminate, which allows for surface refurbishment.
If you mean restoration with value retention, this service is rare and comparatively expensive. Often, the result is mainly a visual reconstruction of the surface rather than a traditional repair of the stains.
Conclusion: Such specialists do exist but are not specifically focused on Kallax units. Make sure to pay attention to detailed service descriptions when requesting quotes.
