PONUFLOHello everyone,
I have a somewhat specific question: Are there any reliable tricks or methods to prevent mold growth in a Kallax shelf?
The shelf is placed in a rather damp room, and despite regular ventilation and cleaning, small mold spots occasionally appear, especially in the lower compartments. This is not only unsightly but also damages the stored items.
I have considered whether the material or air circulation might be the cause. I’m interested in practical tips, such as the best way to position the shelf, whether special protective treatments can be used, or how to effectively reduce moisture inside the shelf.
Maybe someone has experience with Kallax or similar shelving units placed in damp environments and can offer targeted advice. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Are there really reliable tips or methods to prevent mold growth in a Kallax shelf? The first question is how high the humidity level in the room actually is and whether the cause really lies with the shelf itself or rather with the surrounding environment.
Just because the material seems prone to mold does not automatically mean that a few home remedies will work wonders. I haven’t come across any evidence or reliable studies on specific protective treatments for Kallax.
Ventilation does help, but I would also recommend ensuring targeted air circulation—for example, by slightly moving the shelf away from the wall.
Are the walls behind the shelf also damp? Can this be measured precisely? I ask because otherwise any countermeasures might be ineffective.
Wood or MDF furniture, such as Kallax, is porous and therefore sensitive to moisture.
Tip: Seal furniture with paint or clear varnish to prevent moisture absorption.
Also, ensure proper air circulation by avoiding placing objects directly against the back panel whenever possible.

I measured the area with a moisture meter; the values are borderline damp, around 18 to 20% relative moisture in the wall behind the shelf, while the room averages about 55% humidity. The device is recommended by a DIY portal.

I wonder, though, if this is really enough if the humidity in the air stays high.
Are there maybe special dehumidifiers for rooms or even devices designed specifically to protect shelving?
