Hello everyone, I have a question and hope to benefit from your experience: How do you prevent small items like screws, magnets, or other small parts from falling through the back panel of your Kallax shelving unit? I’ve noticed that the back panel on this Ikea model is usually made of thin particleboard or hard cardboard and is often not fully secured. Since many have an open shelf design without any cutouts in the back panel, small items sometimes fall through when someone accidentally pushes them against the back or when the shelf is bumped lightly against the wall. I’m not necessarily looking for aesthetic solutions, but rather practical ones that work well and can be easily installed or attached without causing permanent damage to the shelf. What methods, materials, or tricks do you use to reliably prevent small parts from falling through?

I attach a thin plastic film to the inside of the back wall. It is sturdy enough to hold small items and relatively unobtrusive. Alternatively, magnetic sheets also work if you want to store magnets.

This is basically a workable solution, but do you have any idea how well it will hold up in the long term? Back panels are often not glued fully across the surface but only stapled, so the film could come loose over time or shrink due to heat. Another consideration is whether the adhesive can be removed without leaving residue, in case you want to replace the back panel later.

Personally, I use a thin plywood board that I screw onto the inside of the back panel. It’s not the most elegant solution, but it is mechanically stable and definitely keeps small parts inside. What do you think: does this make the Kallax too heavy or less versatile?

This is indeed a common issue with shelves that have thin back panels. Generally, the best solution is to add an additional intermediate layer.

In the past, I often used stiff craft cardboard, which can be cut to precise measurements in millimeters. The cardboard is attached from the inside using hot glue or double-sided tape, ensuring there are no gaps through which items could slip. This method is very neat and easy to remove if necessary.

I also find this solution very sturdy. The key is to use screws and wall plugs that are not too thick so the panels don’t protrude too much from the wall. If you are somewhat skilled with tools, this can be done very neatly.

If the goal is simply to store small parts securely, it’s also advisable to use appropriate boxes placed inside the Kallax shelf instead of just putting items in loosely. This way, even with minimal gaps, nothing can fall through.
