ruinuGood morning everyone,
I am looking for a way to securely fasten my Ikea Pax wardrobe to wooden floorboards. The floorboards are relatively soft, and I definitely want to avoid the wardrobe tipping over or coming loose, especially for stability and safety when opening and closing the wardrobe doors multiple times.
Does anyone have experience with suitable anchors, screws, or special fastening techniques for wooden floorboards? Are there any special base plates or reinforcements I could use to better distribute the load?
I’m also interested in whether it’s better to fasten the wardrobe feet or the back panel to the wall, or if a combination of both would be more effective.
I look forward to your tips and suggestions, including any recommendations for tools or preparatory work I should consider.
Thanks in advance!

Are there any special base plates or reinforcements I could use to better distribute the load?Yes, there are exactly such options. Wooden or metal plates under the feet significantly help to distribute the load. For fastening to the wall, I also recommend using special heavy-duty anchors for timber framing.
If the floorboards are soft, it’s best to avoid screwing directly into the wood and instead use cavity anchors or metal brackets.
Hello ruinu,
I have read your post carefully and would like to respond in more detail, as attaching an Ikea Pax wardrobe to wooden floorboards can indeed present some challenges.
First, it is important to know the exact construction of the wooden floorboards – are they solid boards, or are they boards laid over a screed with cavities in between? This information influences the choice of fixing methods.
For solid wooden floorboards, you can generally use wood screws that are long enough to hold securely but not so long that they penetrate too deeply and potentially damage wiring or other elements underneath.
My recommendations:
- Use backing plates (e.g., made of steel or thick plywood) to better distribute the force over the boards and reduce point loads.
- Secure the wardrobe additionally to the wall to prevent tipping. Wall anchors with appropriate plugs and screws can be used for this purpose.
- If you are unsure about the load-bearing capacity of the floorboards, it may be sensible to install reinforcements beneath the boards in consultation with a professional.
- Make sure to follow the existing Ikea instructions for wall mounting the Pax, as they also provide guidance on attaching to different wall types.
If you have further questions or can share more details about your type of floorboards, I am happy to help.

I placed small metal plates under the legs, acting as load distributors. This way, the screws don’t press directly into the wood, which is better for the floorboards. Then I attached the back panel to the wall using the small brackets provided – this is important, otherwise the wardrobe tends to slide around on the floor.
Oh, and it’s better to use coarse-thread wood screws, they hold much better!
Don’t worry, with the right preparation, the wardrobe will stand rock solid, almost like newly in love! 😄
To add the following:
Wooden floorboards as a base require careful selection of fasteners. It is recommended to:
- For floor attachment: use washers to distribute pressure and minimize the screws penetrating into the boards.
- For wall mounting: use wood screws of appropriate length that anchor into wall studs or load-bearing wall areas, rather than just drywall or thin panels.
- Check whether the floorboards have reinforcements or cavities.
An important detail: use screws with large heads and, if necessary, suitable washers to spread the forces over a larger area.
Additionally, you should occasionally inspect the fastenings after installation, as wood can easily change due to temperature and humidity. A combination of floor and wall fastening ensures the highest possible stability.
